Gmail SMTP details for Outlook server settings

Turn on the access for less secure apps in Gmail

Before proceeding to set Gmail SMTP settings for outlook, You have to turn on the feature that has blocked other apps from accessing Gmail. By default, This feature is turned off. So, You've to turn it on. Also, Remember that without turning on this feature It will not allow access to other apps even if you provide you Gmail's id and password. Hence, Go step by step in this section.

Open your Google account

Click here to open your Google account. Moreover, You can also open it by clicking on your profile picture shown at the top-right corner of Gmail. Also, remember that If you have multiple Google account logged on in the same browser then you have to change it manually. Because from here, Your default logged in account will open.

Navigate to the Security tab from the left panel

In this step, Navigate to the Security tab from the left side panel. Moreover, The Security tab contains all the controls related to the security of your Google account. Also, see the following picture to locate this tab.

Scroll down to the section of Less secure apps access

In this step, Under the Security tab, Scroll down to the bottom and locate the section of Less secure apps access. This feature controls the less secure apps from accessing your Gmail. Moreover, see the below image to locate this section.

Here, You can see the button Turn on access. Now, click on this button. When you click on this button, You will see the switch to turn this feature ON. Furthermore, see the below picture to locate the switch.

Now, Turn this switch ON. By doing so, Gmail will send you an email regarding this decision. Now, the less secure apps access is turned ON and then click on the back icon. This way, access is granted as you can see in the following image.

Outlook server settings for Gmail

In this section, You are going to familiar with Gmail SMTP details. Here, I am going to list all the steps in detail.

Open Microsoft Outlook

In this step, You have to open Microsoft Outlook. Also, do practices to install the latest version of the outlook as it may easier for the latest Gmail SMTP server settings for outlook. Moreover, In this article, I am using Microsoft Outlook 2013 as seen from the following image.

Then, click on the Next button to proceed further. After that, you will see the following in which Outlook is asking you to set up the Outlook to connect to the email account. Furthermore, the Yes option is by default selected. So, click the Next button again to proceed for the second step.

Select manual set up and choose the service

In this step, You are going to select the type of set up and service. For that, select the Manual setup or additional server types option from the bottom and press the Next button to proceed further. Furthermore, see the following image to locate this option.

Next, Outlook will display the list of three services, and out of 3 services you have to select the one. Hence, Select POP or IMAP and again click the Next button to proceed for the third step.

In this step, You have to provide the data of the SMTP server and also your login credentials. Moreover, This step is very crucial for you.

Provide basic information for IMAP account settings

Now, For this step, Be ready with the following details.

  • Your name for Outlook
  • Email address
  • Gmail login username (Email) and password

Enter the details as following for IMAP account settings.

  • User Information
    • Your Name: Your name ( I recommend First name and Last name)
    • Email Address: Your email address associated with your Gmail account (for instance, the email address that ends with @gmail.com like abc@gmail.com)
  • Server Information
    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
  • Logon Information
    • User Name: Your Gmail Username (i.e. email address)
    • Password: Gmail account password

When details are filled, click on the More Settings button to proceed further. By clicking on this button, a new window Internet E-mail Settings will open. Then click on the Outgoing Server tab to open it.

In the Outgoing Server tab, you will find the checkbox at the top. In the beginning, The checkbox will not be selected. So, you have to select it. Moreover, The by selecting the checkbox, You are instructing the Outlook that your Outgoing server (SMTP server) requires authentication. In addition to that, The below radio button which further instructs to use the same settings as your incoming mail server. Furthermore, see the following image to locate this checkbox.

Next, switch to the Advanced tab from the same window to proceed for the next step.

Provide Gmail server port number for SMTP and IMAP

In this step, You are going to enter the Gmail server port number for SMTP and IMAP in the Advanced tab. Hence, enter the details for the required fields as per the following.

  • Gmail SMTP port settings
    • Gmail SMTP port number: 993
    • The type of encrypted connection for SMTP: SSL
  • Gmail IMAP port settings
    • Gmail IMAP port number: 465
    • The type of encrypted connection for IMAP: SSL

After entering the required details, Click the OK button to save the settings. So, the Intenet Email Settings window will be closed and you will be back to the IMAP account settings window. Now, click the Next button as shown in the following image.

When you click on the Next button, Outlook will start to test the account settings, consequently, you will receive the test email. If the testing for account settings be successful then Outlook will save it and open the mailbox of Outlook and start synching the emails from Gmail as shown in the following image, Else It will ask for login credentials again.
