Android studio performance on this laptop is pretty impressive. In my tests, Tablet emulators were running perfectly without any lag, thanks to its 4GB NVIDIA graphics. And, I have also tested Google Chrome (The most resource-consuming browser) parallel to the Android Studio with live emulators. And, I found that everything runs smoothly, thanks to its 8GB RAM that made multitasking smooth. Furthermore, Android Studio loaded the project files very fast because of the faster SSD.

Talking about heat, I have tested it on gaming and found rear vents were got quite a heat. Also, I felt the heat from some of the keys on the keyboard. The 70 blades fans were tested in the conference room. The fans were heard, but the level wasn't distracting me. Also, I don't like the Camera and Ports placement.

It's available on Lenovo with slightly higher specs at Rs 69,499, but Amazon is offering it at a lower price than that in India. Also, I recommend Amazon to buy a laptop because it is more trusted online store than Flipkart. Lenovo is also a trusted store, but it doesn't offer Pay on delivery mode like Amazon.

The powerful thin Lenovo Laptop from IdeaPad series to buy in India on Amazon at a cheaper price of ₹79,990. It is powered by Intel Core i7 CPU with NVIDIA MX250 2GB GPU.

It's a big brother of the just above one and does the job way faster.

As I said earlier that this laptop is a big brother of the Lenovo S540 (Core i5), Android Studio performance is greatly enhanced in this laptop, thanks to its Intel Core i7 CPU. In this laptop, due to a higher CPU, I have run 3 android projects parallel with 1 emulator for each. And, the performance results were shocking. This laptop has run all the three android app projects very smoothly including the emulators. At the same time, Google Chrome was also running. So, this resource-hungry browser responded without a single lag while switching between tabs.

Talking about the cooling system and fans, this laptop has a similar cooling system to its younger brother. Due to heavy tasks that I have performed on it, I felt some heating on the palm rest place. But, it was not at that much level that can distract me. It's available on Flipkart at ₹89,998, But Amazon is offering the same at a considerably lower price.

Though this laptop can't handle high-end gaming tasks like Lenovo Legion Y540, this Lenovo IdeaPad can run Android Studio with emulators very well. In addition to that, Google Chrome also responded very quickly when run parallel to Android Studio with 3 emulators (Google Pixel and Tablet emulators of 7 inch and 10 inches) at a time, thanks to its 2GB NVIDIA graphics.

Furthermore, the project files were loaded very quickly, thanks to its faster SSD. Although, the same task on hard disk revealed very bad results. Solid-state drives allow to read and write files way faster than hard disk. Despite the thin body, This laptop's cooling system works fine, It doesn't let the device get hot, thanks to its quieter fans.

You can find it on Amazon and Lenovo. However, Lenovo doesn't offer Pay on delivery payment mode. Flipkart has models other than this one at higher prices.

This Lenovo laptop has given the same performance the 2nd Lenovo S540 (Core i5) has given. I have tested it for Android Studio and found that this laptop is pretty useful. Furthermore, the display of this laptop is quite better for android app development. As it is a QHD display, the maximum resolution it supports is 2560x1440. Hence, you will see more content in just a 13.3-inch screen than the FHD screen of a 15.6-inch display. As an android studio and Eclipse contains many tiny icons, this laptop's display is best for them.

Talking about its heat, While running the Android studio with one emulator and 4 tabs on Google Chrome, the laptop becomes slightly hotter compared to the above IdeaPads. Also, its high-resolution display needs more processing power than a 1080p display. But, its cooling system works perfectly.

It's available on Lenovo at ₹81,490 with no Pay on delivery payment mode. But, Amazon is offering a lower price than Lenovo with Cash on the Delivery mode in India.

Lenovo ThinkPad T490 laptop belongs to the ThinkPad series. It is military-grade laptop offered by Lenovo to android developers. It is powered by Intel Core i7 with NVIDIA MX250 2Gb GPU. It is most recommended since it is coming with almost 3 years of warranty on Amazon. You can buy it on Amazon India at a price of ₹1,37,790. Moreover, Lenovo is also offering it on its Online store in India at slightly higher price of ₹1,41,220 than Amazon India.

Although this laptop is too pricey, it does offer great value and comes with a long warranty on Amazon. I have tested 3 android app projects downloaded from GitHub with 1 emulator for each. Also, I ran Google Chrome parallel to the android studio. During my testings, this laptop never lagged. Pretty cool!

Talking about heat, this laptop is made to meet the industry standards. Hence, the high price is worthy of this laptop. Moreover, the cooling system of this ThinkPad is pretty awesome, you won't feel the heat on the keyboard and palm rest place. The fans are not even heard in the conference room.

I have tested 4 android app projects with 2 emulators for each and 7 opened tabs on Google Chrome browser. Despite such heavy tasks, this laptop didn't lag, thanks to its CPU and 4GB NVIDIA GPU. You just understand that 8 emulators running smoothy, How it's possible? But this ThinkPad has made it possible.

Talking about the cooling system, this laptop was got hotter since I have performed the heaviest task on it. But, its cooling system is pretty impressive which made the vents hot, but let me not feel the heat on the keyboard and a palm rest area. And, that's what the main factor you should consider while purchasing a thin laptop for the heaviest tasks.

How to choose a laptop for Android development?

In this section, I will be giving you the most important information on how to select a laptop for android developers. So, my guidance will begin by mentioning the most popular software and its requirements for android developers followed by the common tasks that android developers often do while developing the app.

Furthermore, you might have a question, How I know much about android development?. I know it because I have made several android apps and they are live on the Google Play store at a publisher's name of Super Premium Games.

In addition to that, the laptops that I have used for the testing were not a brand-new. They were used-laptops, hence, It gives you information that despite being used-laptops (I have taken them on rent), they have performed all the tasks very well.

To develop android apps, you need either Android Studio, Eclipse, or Microsoft Visual Studio. Among this three software, Android Studio is the most popular and recommended by Google, Hence, I have used it and tested it on these laptops.

Now, the requirements for running an Android Studio are:

For Windows: 8GB recommended RAM, 64bit operating system, minimum 2GB hard disk, and 1280x800 minimum screen resolution.

For Linux: 8GB recommended RAM, 64bit operating system, minimum 2GB hard disk, and 1280x800 minimum screen resolution.

Hence, I have tried to find the laptops that meet the above requirements, and luckily they are meeting.

So, the following are the steps that you have to follow while selecting a laptop for android development.

STEP-1: SELECT AN OPERATING SYSTEM

From the developer's point of view, Unix based operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS are most preferred. Even Mac OS is the best for android development because Macbook Pro gives 4X performance speed.

Here, all these Lenovo laptops support either Windows, Unix, or both on dual boot. They are coming with only Windows OS. Hence, you have to manually install Linux if you want to use it. To use Mac OS, go for the Macbook Pro.

STEP-2: CHOOSE THE HIGHER PROCESSOR

Lenovo laptops are mostly coming with Intel's processor. All of the laptops mentioned in this article have Intel's processor.

NEVER GO FOR INTEL CORE-I3 OR AMD RYZEN-3 PROCESSOR!

Intel Core-i5: Intel Core-i5 provides a good performance compared to the Core i3. In android app development, If you are planning to use an external device to test an app then you can skip the laptop with a high-end GPU. Intel Core-i5 can do the computational job better. The job of a processor comes in a picture when you're using multiple plugins at a time. AMD Ryzen-5 is an equivalent to the Core-i5.

Intel Core-i7: Intel Core-i7 can do the high graphics job easily like running an emulator. Although, you won't be able to run multiple emulators in parallel with each other because it requires a GPU to handle. Furthermore, Core-i7 can also handle the multiple android app projects in parallel when the files are stored on an SSD. AMD Ryzen Core-i7 is an equivalent to the Core-i7. One thing I forget to mention that don't open Google Chrome while multiple emulators are running on Core-i7 Non-discrete GPU laptop. Because a resource-hungry browser will create lag.

STEP-3: GO FOR GRAPHICS CARD

The use of the graphics card in the laptop for android app development is a game-changer in terms of performance and smoothness. If it has a GPU, you don't have to worry about the performance while testing the app for different devices like 7-inch & 10-inch tablets, Pixel, and other emulators in parallel. Because all the graphics intensive tasks will be handled by GPU. Hence, your CPU and RAM have much free space to run the Android Studio smooth.

Here, In the case of the mobile development, 2GB discrete graphics made by NVIDIA will work fine, like NVIDIA MX250 2GB is enough to handle.

STEP-4: SELECTION OF RAM

RAM is a place on which all of your applications will run. It provides a space to run the application. Hence, If you don't give a higher enough space, your performance will suck. Listen, Android developers just don't use Android Studio alone while working on it. They do use a web browser with many tabs open, other graphic design software, and many more. Hence, all the running apps need enough space. Also, the operating system needs enough space to let you smooth switch in-between.

Hence, 4GB RAM won't be enough, You need at least 8GB of RAM to run the environment smoother. Also, the laptops we have tested are coming with 8GB of RAM.

STEP-5: PICK UP THE RIGHT STORAGE FOR JOB

You will get three kinds of storage in a market today, hard drive, solid-state drive, and a fusion drive (Hybrid drive). We recommend that the laptop storage must be a combination of 500GB of hard drive and 128GB of a solid-state drive at least or more.

Laptops with only less SSD storage say 128GB or 256GB of storage cannot store much data compared to 500GB or more capacity storage devices. Hence, we recommend that you install your operating system on the SSD and store your photos, songs, videos, and other non-productive files on a hard disk. Non-productive files are the files that you're not going to edit or use them for your android app development task.

The Core-i7 or i5 laptop without graphics card can be feasible, but without an SSD storage, your entire performance will suck. Your laptop must have an SSD because it is more useful than the graphics card.

Why a laptop that you are going to use for android development needs Graphics card?

While developing an android app, you're not just writing programming code. You are dealing with many graphics intensive operations such as Layout design, emulator testing, and other graphics development software such as Adobe Photoshop and/or CorelDraw. Hence, such high-end tasks cannot run smoothly without a discrete GPU.

And, mostly, the android developers come across running of multiple emulators at a time to test their app when they don't have a particular physical device. So, running multiple emulators parallel to the Android Studio and a resource-consuming web browser like Google Chrome will slow down the machine.

Hence, to avoid any lag and let the computer run smoothly, the laptop needs at least 2GB of Graphics card.

Why a laptop for android app development needs an SSD?

An SSD is used inside the laptop to increase the read/write speed at lightning speed. A laptop with SSD and Graphics can enhance the performance to a considerable level. Furthermore, due to the moving parts of an HDD, hard disk is slower and required some time to reach at the file that, in turn, slows down the machine.

How USB Type-C or Thunderbolt port can be a game-changer in a programming purpose laptop?

USB Type-C port allows you to transfer the data at a speed of 10 Gbps which is too fast. A Thunderbolt port lets you transfer the data at a speed of 40 Gbps which is way fast. But, Generally, cheaper programming laptops (Under Rs 70,000) may not have a thunderbolt port. But, they do have a Type-C port. And, using that port you can connect external 4K monitor and take advantage of editing multiple files on a large screen.

Why don't I recommend Core-i3 or equivalent AMD processors for android development?

Intel Core-i3 or equivalent AMD Processor Ryzen-3 is not recommended because Android Studio will work slowly on them due processor's low computational power. And, While writing programming code, there will not be only one file opened, there will be many. And all of them are linked to the plugins which are constantly analyzing it, and giving you suggestions based on your type.

Furthermore, Project building parallel to emulator launching is heavy tasks for Core i3 CPU to handle.

Why do I recommend a laptop of 8GB of minium RAM for Android Studio?

While developing an android app, you will often open a browser with many tabs that will unluckily occupy more RAM. Your operating system has already reserved a RAM for it. And, if you're using a most resource-consuming browser like Google Chrome, then RAM consumption will go higher and higher. Hence, 4GB RAM will suck. Even you won't be able to use Mozilla Firefox parallel to the Android Studio.
