Hello, guys. Today, in this article, I am going to review the Acer Aspire 3 laptop in detail. In addition to that, I will also compare it with other laptops I have reviewed to tell you that is it one you should consider buying?

So, let's get started. But, before I proceed, read out my article on laptop specs to give you the basic idea of what to expect.

Furthermore, I have received the review unit of Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 laptop from New Delhi. Its specs are as follows.

The Build Quality and Material

This Acer Aspire 3 is made of all plastic and has a light silver color. The plastic lid has a dark silver color Acer logo in the center. In addition to that, there are no sharp corners or edges. All of them are rounded.

The build quality, material, and color are found quite similar to HP 14 DK0093AU laptop.

Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of this laptop are 36.3-cm (14.3-inch) in width, 25 cms (9.84-inch) in depth, and 2 cms (0.8-inch) in height. The weight of this laptop was measured using a propert weight meter. And, it is for

  • Laptop only: 1.9 kg (4.2 lbs)
  • Laptop with charging accessories: 2.01 kg (4.43 lbs)

The purpose of measuring the weight with accessories is to give you an idea about the weight that may need to carry while traveling. So, this machine found only lighter than Acer Nitro 5 AN515 when compared to other laptops of the ₹50,000 price range I have reviewed.

When compared in terms of weight to other laptops of similar price, I found this machine at last out of 6. See the comparison in the below chart.

Display Quality and Color Reproduction

Size and Quality

A 15.6-inch FHD 60Hz VA display of Acer Aspire 3.

The 15.6-inch FHD 60Hz VA Non-touch display has little bad viewing angles and it is surrounded by 7.5mm thin side bezels. Although they are not noticeable. It hasn't good viewing angles due to no IPS panel. In terms of quality, it was found quite similar to Lenovo IdeaPad S145 and Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513.

Color Reproduction Efficiency

As shown in the above image, Spyder 5 PRO has ended up the testing with 60% of SRGB, 45% of AdobeRGB, and 44% of NTSC color gamut results. Based on the results, it looks like the screen's color reproduction is falling on the poor side.

The results are little below average when compared to other laptops of similar price range. It is found at 3rd position out of 6. See it in the below chart.

So, overall, the display isn't good in quality for content creators like photo & video editors, designers, and like.

Is the display enough bright?

At 100% of screen brightness, the display has reached 236 Nits at the center of the screen. Based on the results, It looks brighter than HP 14 DK0093AU laptop but low bright when compared to Acer Nitro 5 (246 nits), Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (250 nits), Asus VivoBook M513 (245 nits).

When compared in terms of Nits to other similar price laptops, I found it at 3rd position. In addition to that, this display has an average contrast ratio of 1100:1 compared to the average-quality IPS display.

At thanalysis, we recommend at least 300 nits for the display to properly see the content of screen during sun light. Both Lenovo IdeaPad S540 and ThinkPad E14 have average display nits, 299 and 306, respectively. At the same time, their prices are also quite higher.

Screen Flex

When intentionally moved the screen up and down using fingers with fair pressure, I found little flex there. The flex is caused by a plastic lid. Although, to be honest, it wasn't a problem for me during normal use. Also, I haven't noticed it while opening the machine.

In addition to that, the hinge is connected at corners and runs mostly along the base. While trying to open the laptop with one finger, I failed. That demonstrates the unevenly distributed weight across the hinge.

Keyboard – Tactile, Flex, Build, and RGB Backlit?

Keyboard Flex and Build Quality

The plastic keyboard has a light-silver color island. It has black keys with white fonts on it. The keys size is not too big, not too small, just average. And, In my opinion, it's better than HP DK0093AU's white keyboard.

When pushed it down hard intentionally using fingers with fair pressure, I found little flex there. But, I have faced no issue during normal use. But, if you want a keyboard with no flex, then buy an external keyboard or go for Dell Inspiron 14 3493. It also comes in ₹50,000 price range.

Overall, in terms of keyboard build quality, it feels quite solid during normal use.

Backlit?

Acer hasn't put backlit on Aspire 3 laptop. In my opinion, a keyboard without a backlit feels awkward, especially for a laptop of the 50,000 price range. It is also true that a keyboard without backlit accounts for more in battery life. But, at the same time, it's problematic in the low-ambient-light room for the people who aren't familiar with 10-finger typing.

If backlit concern for you then, I recommend going for Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 laptop. It has a 3-level of single zonal backlit.

Tactile Feedback?

Typing experience consists of many things like tactile feedback, clicky keys, typing noise, shallow feeling for poorly designed keyboard, and many more.

During typing paragraphs on the Notepad, I found the keys were traveling 1.1 to 1.4mm distance downside. So, it's not a tactile keyboard.

In addition to that, Like IdeaPad S145 and Asus VivoBook M513, this Acer Aspire 3 consists of the power button placed next to the "Multiplication" key. But, that's not a problem since you have to long-press it to do anything with the laptop.

Small and Messy 2 Arrow Keys

Smaller and very closely placed 2 arrow Up and Down arrow keys.

Like Lenovo IdeaPads and ThinkPads, and Asus VivoBook, this Acer laptop has small and very closely placed Up and Down arrow keys. I always complain about these smaller arrow keys.

But, that's not a problem for office use and, this laptop is not for gaming. Hence, their size and placement aren't much important to consider.

So, overall, If the backlit and tactile feedback isn't important for you then, this is the machine for you to buy, else I recommend going for Acer Nitro 5 AN515. Its keyboard has both single zonal backlit and tactile keys. Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 has a backlit keyboard but, it's not tactile.

Precision Touchpad?

Smooth, responsive, and accurate 4.1-inch wider plastic white touchpad.

The 4.1-inch wider plastic touchpad is found smooth and responsive. It's Windows recognized precision unit. It clicks down anywhere. In addition to that, it was found accurate at gestures handling.

When compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon's touchpad, this one is quite better as it doesn't bend down when pressed for click. Still, I recommend buying an external mouse for a better experience.

Fingerprints on the Smooth Surface

After using the laptop for almost 2 weeks, I found the fingerprints were shown up but not directly visible as the surface has light-silver color. But, they are easy to clean using micro-fiber cloths. In addition to that, I found no color change of surface over the use.

I am telling you that because while reviewing the Alienware m15 R2 laptop, I found its white surface slightly yellowish at some part over the use. Also, it was hard to clean. But that's not the case with this machine.

In terms of fingerprints visibility, the results were found similar to HP 14 DK0093AU laptop. Dell Inspiron 14 3493 doesn't attract the fingerprint as its surface is made of textured plastic.

RAM

This Acer Aspire 3 A315 laptop is equipped with an 8GB of Single Channel 2666MHz DDR4 RAM to make your multitasking smoother and better compared to 4GB RAM. And, it's also possible to upgrade it to 12GB.

Furthermore, Asus VivoBook has a Dual Channel RAM with a high speed than other laptops. Dual Channel RAM is more efficient in multitasking than the Single Channel one.

Processor and Graphics

As my review unit was restricted from touching the internals, I was unable to remove the bottom cover. But that didn’t stop me from getting internals’ performance.

AMD's Picasso Ryzen-5 4 Core processor and Vega 8 GPU is powering the laptop's performance. The processor has a base speed of 2.1GHz and it can be boosted up to 3.7GHz.

To make the laptop even faster, Acer has put 512GB of PCIe-based solid-state storage to load the files very quickly. This SSD allows you to open and edit large files smoothly. Now, let's check some of the CPU benchmarks.

Cinebench R20 Score

I have taken 3 runs of Cinebench to show you an average of it. Furthermore, Cinebench is a tool used to measure CPU performance.

As this Acer machine has an AMD's processor, the CPU undervolting isn't the case with this laptop. And, usually, CPU undervolting doesn't make any noticeable change in CPU's performance for the laptops under 60,000 price range.

Hence, the CPU Cinebench score was tested with and without a cooling pad to show you whether buying a cooling pad is worthy or not.

Without a cooling pad, Cinebench has shown 356 and 1471 single and multi-core scores, respectively. And, same results got with the use of a cooling pad.

So, the cooling pad is found useless here. See the position of this laptop in the Cinebench score when compared to other laptops in the 50,000 price range.

In addition to that, when compared this Acer Aspire 3 in terms of Cinebench R20 Single core score to other laptops of similar price range, I found this one at 2nd last position. See it in the below chart.

In this comparison, Dell Inspiron 14 3493 is found at first position with a score of 443 followed by Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 (441 score) and Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (441 score). An interesting thing here is that Mi Notebook has just scored little above than this laptop, despite a Core i7 CPU.

When compared in terms of multi core score to similar laptops, I found Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 at 1st position out of 6 with a score of 1852 followed by Dell Inspiron 14 3493 (1751 score). In this comparison, Mi Notebook has performed worst with just 891 multi core score. But, for this laptop, the position was as similar as it was in the Single core comparison.

So, overall, this laptop is quite powerful, thanks to the Intel Core i5 CPU. Now, the question is what these scores tell.

First of all, During the testing, Cinebench R20 puts an excessive load on the CPU to execute the tasks. By doing so, it will check machine’s cooling solution also which other tool doesn’t except for 3DMark. So, when the CPU comes under a heavy load, thermal throttling takes place in the processor and it reduces the performance.

For example, If your CPU has a max clock speed of 4.5GHz, then you will reach 4.1GHz max during gaming or stress tests. The reason for not picking up the limit is thermal throttling. So, If the Cinebench R20 score of the laptop is high means the laptop has high powerful CPU with a better thermal management.

In the case of this Acer Aspire 3 A315, the multi core score is 1471. However, it’s less compared to Asus VivoBook and Dell Inspiron 14 3493. Take a note that Asus has equipped Ryzen processor in its VivoBook while Dell has an Intel Core i5. So, a big difference in scores between VivoBook and this Aspire 3 is in the cooling solution and thermal throttling.

Now, let’s check Geekbench benchmarks.

Geebench 5 Scores

When tested this laptop using Geekbench 5, it has scored 683 for single core and 2764 for multi core. In the following chart, I have compared both scores with other 5 laptops of same price to give you an idea of what to expect from this laptop.

In this comparison, this laptop was found at second last position. The 1st position is hold by Dell Inspiron 14 3493 with a score of 1161. Let’s compared the Multi core scores.

In the multi core score comparison, this machine was found at the same position. The first position is secured by Lenovo IdeaPad S145 with a score of 3851 followed by Dell Inspiron 14 3493 (3476). So, Geekbench performance of this laptop is quite on the poor side.

Now, what does this score tell? It tells the performance of the laptop. The higher the score, the higher the performance. Here, you have to consider the multi core score. Look, Geekbench doesn’t put an excessive load on the CPU like Cinebench R20. And, Geekbench consider mainly productivity tasks like emailing, browsing, multitasking, and etc to evaluate the hardware.

And, such ways cannot give you an idea about the cooling solution. Because tiny tasks doesn’t make much weight on the CPU. Hence, If the laptop has higher Geekbench multi core score means its capability for productivity is much better. But, at the same time, information about thermal throttling and cooling solution will remain unanswered by this tool.

Hence, for gamers and programmers, Geekbench isn’t a tool to evaluate the laptop. It’s better to consider Cinebench here. And, for normal users or office users, this one seems to be getting the job done.

As this machine has a quite lower Geekbench score, it’s not recommended for everyday productivity tasks. You should go for Lenovo IdeaPad or Dell Inspiron 14 3493 laptops than this one – frankly speaking. Let’s check PCMark 10 benchmarks.

PCMark 10 Scores

When tested this Aspire 3 A315-23 using PCMark 10, I found it at second last position with a score of 3803. Mi Notebook 14 Horizon is at 1st position in this comparison with a little higher score of 4391.

PCMark 10 scores involves tasks we do everyday like web browsing, video conferencing, some office work on MS Excel, or entire MS Office, digital content creations like video and photo editing. It also checks for gaming, but for non-gaming laptops I skip that test.

So, PCMark 10 score is also similar to the Geekbench. It’s true that the way they choose to evaluate the hardware is different but the same information you won’t get in its score that you get in the Cinebench R20.

In our case, the comparison of this laptop with other similar priced laptops revealed that Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has highest PCMark 10 score. That means the better productivity. But, at the same time, if you look at Cinebench multi core score, you will find it at last just after following this one.

Now, let’s check 3DMark Fire Strike benchmarks.

3DMark Fire Strike Scores

When tested this laptop for 3DMark Fire Strike benchmarks, I found this laptop at average position with a score of 3576. 3DMark represents the graphics rendering capabilities of the laptop. In this comparison, Mi Notebook is found at the first position (3912 score) due to its MX330 NVIDIA Graphics with 2GB of memory.

Average CPU Clock Speed

The CPU clock speed was measured by performing the stress test using AIDA64. The results of an average of 3 runs are in the below image.

I found the same CPU clock speed of 3273MHz during stress tests, both with and without a cooling pad. In addition to that, It’s useless to measure the GPU clock speed. Because it’s integrated on the same silicon board. It’s not for heavy tasks. Hence, it’s better to skip.

Furthermore, this Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 machine is neither a gaming machine nor, it has even MX series GPU. So, it’s void to conduct the TDP (Thermal power design) test.

As gaming requires more resources, it’s become worthy of measuring the TDP and different ways to reduce it. But that’s not the case with this machine.

Video Editing Performance

The video editing performance of this laptop was tested by two ways.

  • Average of the video export time
  • Multitasking during video export

Average of the video export time

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

So, during my video export test using Adobe Premier CC, this Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 laptop has exported the video in an average of 28 minutes and 44 seconds. That’s too much. See in the below chart where I have compared it with other 5 laptops of nearly same price.

In the video export time comparison, this laptop is found at 2nd position. Surprisingly, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon is at 1st position with 1100 seconds of export time. If you see the overall comparison then all laptops except Mi Notebook have taken too much time for video export. And, at the same time, Mi Notebook has also higher screen color gamut values than this one. So, that makes Notebook 14 much better than this laptop for video editing.

Multitasking during video export

The motive to conduct this test wasn’t other than to rate the smoothness of this laptop when the CPU is busy with intense work. I have checked the following during the video export, the touchpad, keyboard, and laptop’s response time.

So, During this test, I found this laptop almost laggy. As it has no dedicated NVIDIA graphics, not even of the MX series, the expectation of good performance is useless. Overall, I found it below an average for video editing like Inspiron 3493, IdeaPad S145, HP 14 DK0093AU, and Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 when compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon edition.

Thermal Performance

This test was performed to tell you whether the cooling pad is efficient in temperature reduction with stable or increased performance. For the stress test, I have used the AIDA64 tool. So, the results are in the below image.

At idle, the CPU was 47 degrees C hot. During the stress test at an auto fan without a cooling pad, the CPU's temperature was 78 degrees C. And, it was the same when I have used a cooling pad. So, again, a cooling pad is found ineffective in reducing the CPU's temperature. Better not to buy it for this machine.

Furthermore, in the following chart, I have compared the temperatures of laptops (the same and below price) measured during stress test at an auto fan.

In this comparison with similar priced laptops, this laptop is found at 1st position. That demonstrates a well built cooling solution.

This temperature readings gives you an idea about its temperature when you are dealing with processor-intensive tasks like video editing, programming, and like.

In this comparison, Mi notebook 14 is found to be bad in cooling solution (86 degrees Celsius)

Laptop’s Exterior Temperature

At idle at an auto fan, both the palm rest and a keyboard were found pretty cool.

During the stress test, the keyboard was found at mid 40 C. The top of the base was near 53 C. At the same time, Both touchpad and a palm rest found cool. And nearly similar results obtained when used the cooling pad.

Here, again, the cooling pad is found unworthy for this laptop. So, in terms of thermal management, this laptop is pretty average when compared to other laptops I have reviewed.

Fans Noise Level

This Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 has only one fan to cool it down. At idle, the fan was 34.7dB noisy, and during the stress test, its noise level was increased to 48.1dB. The noise level was measured using Digitech's sound level meter.

The results show that the fan is completely silent at idle and just heard during stress tests. Pretty average results when compared to the other laptops in the ₹50,000 price range I have reviewed.

As per the above chart, this laptop is found at 3rd position. In this comparison, Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is found to have the most silent fan (47.1dB) followed by Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (47.9dB). And, Dell Inspiron 14 3493 is found to have the most noisy fan (50.7dB) in this comparison.

In addition to that, the gaming laptops have the most noisy fans. If you read my review articles of Dell Alienware m15 R2, Lenovo Legion 7i, MSI GS65 Stealth-004, and Razer Blade Pro 17 gaming laptops, you will find the noise emitted by their fans was reaching 60dB. And, that’s become equal to the noise emitted by washing machine, hair dryer, and electric toothbrush. But, this one isn’t a gaming laptop. Such scenario is not the case with this laptop.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera and a microphone with a status LED are placed at the top bezel of the laptop. In quality, both are too poor, not even up to the mark. During video call on Google Meet, I found it was capturing a lot of distraction.

Furthermore, from the camera and microphone quality, it will be stupid if I expect Windows Hello support. For little better camera quality, go with Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513.

When compared to other 5 laptops of same price range, I found this one at 2nd position. See it in the following chart.

When compared in terms of microphone quality to the same laptops, the results are pretty same for this machine. See in the below chart.

Speakers

A down-firing speaker of this laptop placed at front corners underneath.

The 2 down-firing speakers are placed at the front corners underneath the laptop. While watching the YouTube video, I found they aren't enough-loud at maximum volume. When the loudness was tested using Digitech's sound level meter, it was found 77dB louder that's little less than average.

In addition to that, speakers feel tiny at max and also have little bass present. Overall, the speaker's quality isn't up to the mark. They are just okay. But, when tested for LatencyMon, I found all the green lines there.

As per the above chart, this Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 is found at the last position with enough sound clarity. Furthermore, Asus VivoBook is found to have awesome combination of speaker’s loudness and clarity compared to other laptops of similar price range.

This Acer Aspire 3 has no USB Type-C port. When compared to the same price laptops, I found 3 other laptops of similar price have this port. See in the below chart.

Backside

There is nothing on the back except for air exhaust.

Air Intake Vents

Air intake vents are placed on the right side of the bottom cover - directly above the fan. But, thermal tests revealed that even the cooling pad is unable to make any noticeable change in CPU’s temperature.

Battery

The 36Wh battery has lasted for 52 minutes during the stress test and 4 hours and 11 minutes during the YouTube watch. YouTube watch was carried out at 50% of screen brightness and background apps disabled.

When compared in terms of battery life during stress test, the results are again found pretty same.

Storage

This Acer Aspire 3 has 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. I have used the CrystalDiskMark tool to test its speed. And the results are below.

The SSD was found pretty fast as usual with 1589MB/sec of reading and 855MB/sec of writing speeds.

So, this is the end of this article. I haven't checked any gaming benchmarks because this Acer machine has no dedicated NVIDIA GPU, hence not capable of gaming. The Vega 8 graphics can't even run the emulator smoothly.
