Hello, guys. Today, In this article, I'm going to review the Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 laptop in detail. Here, I will follow each of the insides and compare it with other laptops to let you know that is it the machine you should consider buying?

So, let's get started. But, before I proceed, read my article on the explanation of laptop specs to get the basic idea on laptop internals.

In addition to that, the review unit I have received from New Delhi was brand-new with one strict restriction to not to open the bottom cover. My unit has the following specs.

The Build Quality and Material

Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 has plastic build.

The Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 has a Cobalt Blue Plastic build. The interior is a smooth matte plastic finish. In addition to that, there is a silver ring around the touchpad and yellow accenting around the Enter-key to easily distinguish it.

But, despite the plastic build, it feels sturdy and solid enough. Overall, it feels okay like other plastic-build laptops I have tested.

Dimensions and Weight

This laptop is 14-inch in width, 9.3-inch in depth, and 0.8-inch in height.

The dimensions of this VivoBook 15 are 36 cms (14.2-inch) in width, 23.5 cms (9.3-inch) in depth, and 2 cms (0.8-inch) in height. In addition to that, I have also measured its weight as alone and with charging accessories.

  • For laptop with charging accessories: 4.4 lbs (2 kg)

The purpose to check the laptop's weight with its charging accessories is to give you an idea about the weight you may need to carry during traveling. It's heavier when compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon, but lighter than Razer Blade (3.55 kg), Dell G3 3500 (3 kg), Legion 7i (3.13 kg), and Dell Alienware (3.3 kg). But, found heavier than MSI GS65 Stealth-004 (2.40 kg). See more weight comparison in the following chart.

Display Quality and Color Reproduction

Size and Quality

The 15.6-inch 1080p 60Hz display of Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 laptop.

This M513 VivoBook has a 15.6-inch 1080p 60Hz VA display. The viewing angles are bit below average due to the VA panel. And, it is surrounded by 7.5mm thin bezels from both sides.

So, not a better screen quality in terms of viewing angles when compared to Mi Notebook's display.

Color Reproduction Efficiency

I have measured the screen color gamut to measure color reproduction efficiency. For that, I have used the Spyder 5 PRO. And the SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC results for this VA display are in the below image.

As shown in the above image, with 59% of SRGB, 46% of AdobeRGB, and 43% of NTSC color gamut results. So the results make this laptop useless for professional photo & video editors because they require a very high color reproduction display. When compared in terms of screen color gamut to other laptops of same price, I found this laptop little behind than average. See it in the below chart.

As per the above chart, HP 14 DK0093AU is little bit accurate in color reproduction than this laptop. But, at the same time, in terms specs, it's behind than this one. Read its review article here. In addition to that, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has also little higher SRGB value.

Is the display enough bright?

The chart of brightness vs nits. At 100% of brightness, the laptop's display reaches 245 nits.

M513's display has reached 245 Nits at 100% of screen brightness at the center of the screen. So, below an average brighter display. The average brighter display should have nits value at least 290 to 300. When compared to other 5 laptops of the same price, this one found at the 2nd position. Mi's notebook has little bit more display nits than this machine. Although, all of the laptops are below an average brighter. See the comparison in the below chart.

Furthermore, the screen contrast ratio is little higher (1100:1). So, overall, the display is also falling on the poor side in terms of brightness. You will have a problem to see the content during the high ambient light.

Screen Flex

When intentionally moved the screen with fingers up and down, I found a little more screen flex there. That's due to the plastic lid. But, overall, I haven't experienced any issue during normal use.

In addition to that, At first sight, the hinge looks like it's running along the base. But it's not. The hinge is placed at the corners at the back of the base. Furthermore, such placement didn't allow the laptop to open with one finger. That demonstrates unevenly distributed weight across the hinge.

Keyboard – Tactile, Flex, Build, and RGB Backlit?

Keyboard Flex and Build Quality

The Chiclet keyboard of this laptop has some flex when pushed it down hard.

As I said, the whole body is made of plastic. So, when I have pressed it down hard using fingers with fair pressure, the keyboard was bent a little. And the flex was also found extended towards the palm rest area. But, during aggressive typing, I found no issue over there.

The flat square keys with rounded corners have back color and white fonts on it. They are average in size. In addition to that, the WASD part isn't highlighted. But, that's not required as this Asus VivoBook isn't a gaming laptop.

Single Zonal White Backlit

The Chiclet keyboard has 3 levels of a single zone of white backlit. You can either turn it on whenever it requires, increase the level, or also can completely turn it off when you don't need it. In addition to that, The secondary functions of keys are little less illuminated when the backlit is at maximum. That's bit disappointing thing about this machine.

The interesting fact is that this is the only non-gaming laptop that has a backlit on the keyboard.

Overall, I found the Chiclet keyboard of this laptop quite better than Mi Notebook 14 Horizon's Scissor mechanism. Also, Mi has not put the backlit on it. So, not incredible but not bad even, just a little above an average to get the job done.

Typing Experience

The keyboard has tactile feedback to give during typing.

Typing experience consists of many things like tactile feedback, clicky keys, typing noise, shallow feeling for poor keyboard, and many more.

Typing on this laptop was an average good experience for me. During typing a para on Notepad, I was getting almost 1.4 to 1.5mm key-travel. Still, I can't say that it's a tactile keyboard. Also, during typing, I got some shallow feeling.

In addition to that, the power button is placed next to the "Division" button. But, it hasn't made any accidental wrong press due to it requires a long press to choose the action. So, overall, in terms of tactile feedback, I found it a lot better than Mi. In Mi Notebook 14, I was getting inconsistent tactile feedback. But, that's not the case with this laptop.

Small and Messy 4 Arrow Keys

The 4 arrow keys are smaller in size and also bad-placed. They are too small and near to each other, which will make the accidental wrong press very easily.

So, overall, the keyboard is not incredible. It is just okay but better than Mi Notebook 14 laptop.

Precision Touchpad?

Smooth, responsive, and accurate touchpad. Though, it's not Windows recognized precision unit.

The 4.1 inches wide touchpad is found smooth, responsive, and accurate. Though it's not Windows recognized precision unit. It is made of plastic. In addition to that, it clicks down anywhere and has no separate buttons to click. Like Mi Notebook's touchpad, this one doesn't bend more when pressed.

Furthermore, Unlike most other laptops, the fingerprint sensor is integrated with a touchpad at the top right corner. And, you will find a silver accenting around the touchpad.

This touchpad will surely not help you in gaming. For that, you need to buy a dedicated gaming mouse.

Fingerprints on the Smooth Surface

Fingerprints easily show up on the smooth matte black finish. But, I found it easy to clean using a micro-fiber cloth. In addition to that, unlike Alienware m15 R2 gaming laptop, I found no change in surface color over the use. In Alienware's white version, I found it was getting slightly yellowish at some of the parts.

RAM

This Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 has 8GB of dual channel 3200MHz DDR4 RAM. So, a big amount for you for better and smoother multitasking. Unlike other same price non-gaming laptop like Mi Notebook 14 and Dell Inspiron 14 3493, you can upgrade it up to 12GB.

Processor and Graphics

As my review unit was restricted from touching the internals, I am unable to remove the bottom cover. But that doesn't stop me from getting internals' performance.

An AMD Ryzen 5 and integrated AMD Vega 6 GPU is powering the laptop to give you high performance. In addition to that, to make this laptop even faster, Asus has provided 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. That allows us to read and write the files at lightning speed.

So, let's check some of the benchmark to see where this laptop stands in terms of specs.

Cinebench R20 Score

Here, I took 3 runs of Cinebench on this laptop and shown the average of it. Cinebench is a tool to measure the single and multi-core score of CPU.

Unlike in Mi Notebook, Dell G3 3500, and other Intel-powered laptops, I cannot do CPU undervolting here. Hence, the only thing that remains for us is to check the performance with and without a cooling pad.

So, without a cooling pad, the single and multi-core scores were 441 and 1852, respectively. And, with a cooling pad, both' scores were found the same. So, the use of a cooling pad for this laptop is useless as no change is shown on the Cinebench score.

In addition to that, when compared to other 5 laptops, I found it the second most powerful in terms of processing power of single core. Mi Notebook 14 has Intel Core i7 processor but still it has achieved 441 single core score. See the comparison in the below chart.

When compared in terms of multi core score, I found this machine at the first position. Despite higher processor does Mi notebook have, it has scored just 891 in multi core even the prices are same. See the comparison in the below chart.

So, based on the Cinebench score comparison, I found this laptop has a quite powerful AMD Ryzen 5-4500U Renoir (Zen 2) CPU compared to other laptops with Intel powered CPU.

Geekbench 5 Score

When tested this Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 using Geekbench 5, I found this laptop has scored 789 for single core and 2987 for multi core. See in the below charts where I have compared Geekbench 5 scores with other laptops of same prices to give you an idea of what to expect.

As per the above chart, this laptop isn't performed well in terms of single core. Dell Inspiron 14 3493, Lenovo IdeaPad S145, and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has higher single core score than this one. Let's see at the multi core score.

The results for multi core score comparison are quite same to we just have seen above. So, it tells you that this laptop is average for productivity tasks. But as per the cinebench scores, it's good for the CPU-intensive tasks.

If you look at the difference in the Geekbench single and multi core score between Mi Notebook 14 and this laptop, there's only a little difference. And, if you the compare the Cinebench single and multi core scores for the same laptops, you will notice a big difference.

So, overall, these scores tell that this machine is capable enough to handle the processor-intensive tasks smoothly compared to other laptops of same prices.

PCMark 10 Score

When tested this Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 for PCMark 10 benchmarks, I found this laptop at 4th position with a score of 3878 when compared to other 5 laptops of prices below ₹60,000. In this comparison, Mi's notebook is leading the competition. This laptop is found little below an average.

3DMark Fire Strike Score

When tested this laptop for 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark, it has secured the 2nd position with 3726 score. 3DMark represents the graphics rendering capabilities of the machine. Similarly to PCMark 10 score comparison, Mi's notebook is found leading because of NVIDIA's MX330 GPU. But, this laptop is found following it, thanks to Radeon RX Vega 6 Graphics.

Average CPU Clock Speed

To check the CPU clock speeds, I have used AIDA64 tool.

In a stress test at an auto fan without a cooling pad, the CPU and GPU clock speeds were 3241. The same test with a cooling pad has raised the CPU speed by 5MHz. So, no noticeable change has been observed. It clearly indicates that the use of a cooling pad for this laptop is useless. Hence, only buy it if you're about to waste your money.

As AMD RX Vega 6 Graphics is integrated within the same silicon board and not much powerful as dedicated GPUs, it's worthless to measure its speed. Because it won't make any noticeable change.

Furthermore, as this Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 is neither a gaming laptop not it has even MX series NVIDIA GPU, it's void to conduct the CPU and GPU TDP test. Hence, for a non-gaming laptop like this one, I have skipped such a test.

Video Editing Performance

The video editing performance of this laptop was tested by two ways.

  • Average of the video export time
  • Multitasking during video export

Average of the video export time

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

So, during my test of video export in 4K preset, the Asus has ended up in on average 29 minutes and 6 seconds. That's too much. See in the below chart where I have compared the video export time taken for the same video by 5 other laptops of price below ₹60,000.

As per the above chart, Mi Notebook is at the 1st position with 1100 seconds. All the other laptops including this Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 have taken quite a higher time than Notebook 14 Horizon. So, again, Mi is clear winner for video editing but keep in mind that this laptop higher color reproduction display than Mi's.

Multitasking during video export

The motive to conduct this test wasn’t other than to rate the smoothness of this laptop when the CPU is busy with intense work. I have checked the following during the video export, the touchpad, keyboard, and laptop’s response time.

So, During this test, I found this laptop almost laggy. As it has no dedicated NVIDIA graphics, not even of the MX series, the expectation of good performance is useless. Overall, I found it below an average for video editing when compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon edition.

Thermal Performance

This test was performed to tell you whether the cooling pad is efficient in temperature reduction with stable or increased performance. For the stress test, I have used the AIDA64 tool. So, the results are in the below image.

At idle at the auto fan, the CPU temperature was 41 degrees C. In the stress test at an auto fan, it has raised to 81. With the use of a cooling pad, it has a little reduced to 79 C.

So, the use of a cooling pad has shown little noticeable reduction of 2 degrees in CPU temperature. That's not a big change in my eyes, but if you think it's matter for you than must go for buying.

Furthermore, in the following chart, I have compared the temperatures of laptops (the same and below price) measured during stress test at an auto fan.

As per the above chart, this laptop is found to have little good thermal management compared to other laptops. It refers the temperature of CPU when you are dealing with the high processor-intensive tasks like video export, little bit gaming, execution of programming code, and like.

So, overall, compared to Mi Notebook 14, this laptop has a quite better thermal management. As this laptop is 5 degrees Celsius cooler than Mi. In this comparison, Acer Aspire 3 A315 found to have better thermal management.

Laptop’s Exterior Temperature

At idle at an auto fan, both the palm rest and a keyboard found pretty cool.

During the stress test at the auto fan, the palm rest was found cool to touch. The middle of the keyboard was at mid 40 C. The sides of the middle of the keyboard were found less hot compared to it. The exterior above the function keys was a bit hotter to touch. Furthermore, there was no difference between the QWERTY part and other keys in terms of temperature.

During the same test with a cooling pad, I found nearly similar results that I have got without it except for the right part of the keyboard. It was a little less hot to touch.

Fans Performance

Fans noise level in dB measured by Digitech's sound level meter during idle mode and stress test at auto fan of Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 laptop.

At idle, the fan was 36.1dB louder - not even heard. During the stress test at an auto fan, the fan was 49.7dB louder - Below an average when compared to others. Like Mi Notebook 14 Horizon, this laptop got 1 fan.

As per the above chart, this Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 has the second most noisy fans when compared to other laptops of same price range. Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has the most silent fan (47.1dB) followed by Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (47.9dB). And, Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has the most noisy fan (50.7dB).

In addition to that, the gaming laptops like Lenovo Legion 7i, Dell Alienware m15 R2, MSI GS65 Stealth-004, and like have more noisy fans than this one. the noise level during gaming at performance mode increases to 60dB. And, that's become equal to the noise emitted by washing machine, hair dryer, and electric toothbrush.

But, such scenario is not the case with this laptop.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera and microphone are good at capturing the face and voice, respectively. Furthermore, the camera doesn't support Windows Hello here. And, the microphone is good but also captured some noise with my voice.

When compared in terms of camera quality to other 5 laptops of price range below than this one, this machine has secured 1st position along with Lenovo IdeaPad S145 and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon. See in the below chart.

As per the above chart, Dell Inspiron 14 3493 and HP 14 DK0093AU have a quite low camera quality. When compared in terms of microphone quality to the same laptops, the results are pretty same. See in the below chart.

Overall, both are very good when compared to Mi Notebook. To the worse, Mi has provided a separate camera that is the biggest cons of its Notebook. So, Asus clearly wins here.

Speakers

The 2 down-firing speakers towards the sides at front corner.

The 2 down-firing speakers are placed at the front corners of sides underneath the laptop. They are pretty loud at maximum volume but a bit tiny with a little bass present. In addition to that, while watching the YouTube video, Digitech's sound level meter has measured the sound. The sound level was 84dB and changing around it.

As shown in the above chart, When compared in terms of sound level, Asus VivoBook has secured 2nd position. Lenov IdeaPad is on the 1st position in this comparison with 86dB of sound level whereas Acer Aspire 3 A315 is at the last position with 77dB. It's to note that IdeaPad S145's sound isn't much clear like this one's.

When compared in terms of sound clarity, I found this laptop at 1st position followed by HP 14 DK0093AU and Acer Aspire 3 A315.

On the left side of this Asus VivoBook, there are the following ports from left to right.

  • 1 3.5mm audio/combo jack
  • 1 USB Gen-1 Type-C (for data transfer only, no thunderbolt support)
  • 1 HDMI 2.0 output
  • 1 USB 3.0 Type-A Gen-1
  • Power input

Luckily this notebook has USB Type-C Gen 1 port is available for data transfer only. It can transfer the data at the rate up to 5Gbps. When compared to the same laptops, I found 2 other laptops have this port. See in the below chart.

The micro SD card slot speed was tested using the CrystalDiskMark tool. The results are in the below image.

So, CrystalDiskMark has shown, on average, 22MB/sec for reading and write speed. Pretty similar when compared to Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop.

Backside

There's nothing on the backside of this M513 VivoBook except air exhausts.

Air Intake Vents

Too few air intake vents, directly above the fan, underneath the laptop.

There are too few air intake vents. They air at the right-back of the bottom and directly above the fan. Such a mechanism allows the fresh air to enter to cool down the processor.

Battery

Battery life test. This Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 laptop's 42Wh battery lasted for 85 minutes during stress test and 375 minutes during YouTube Watching.

To be frank, this laptop didn't get a long-lasting battery for CPU-intensive tasks. The 42Wh battery is powering the laptop and lasted for 1 hour and 15 minutes during continuous stress tests. And, 6 hours and 15 minutes on YouTube Watching at 50% of screen brightness, keyboard backlighting turned off, and background apps disabled.

When compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon laptop, it sucks. Because a 48Wh battery is powering the Mi Notebook and, it has lasted for 7 hours and 29 minutes. Overall, the battery life is about average in life and quality.

When compared in terms of battery capacity to the same laptops, I found this notebook is ranking on the 3rd position out of 6. See in the below chart.

When compared in terms of battery life during YouTube watching, its position slipped one step behind.

When compared in terms of battery life during stress test, the results are again found pretty same for this VivoBook m513.

In all of these comparisons, I found Mi Notebook 14 has a quite higher battery life compared to other laptops due to its 48Wh capacity battery. And, Acer Aspire 3 has very short battery life due to its 36Wh low capacity battery.

This Asus VivoBook found at average position with 42Wh battery capacity.

Storage

This laptop has got 512GB of PCIe-based solid-state storage to provide a possible high performance. I have used the CrystalDiskMark tool to test its speed. And the results are below.

It's too fast. The read speed I got was 1789MB/sec on average and, the write speed was 864MB/sec. So, better results to load and edit large files quickly and smoothly.

So, that's the end of this article. I haven't checked the gaming benchmarks on this laptop because an integrated AMD Vega 6 isn't capable of gaming, even not capable of running emulators properly.
