Hello, guys. Today, In this article, I am going to review the Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop. The review unit that I had received was a brand-new from New Delhi. Furthermore, as it's capable of gaming, I have also tested the Gaming FPS data.

So, let's get started. But, before I proceed, do read my article on the explanation of laptop specs which will give you an idea of what to expect from the hardware by version's information. The review unit which I have received has the specs as follows.

The Build Quality and Material

This Dell G3 is available in two colors. The one is alpine white with a blue accent. Another one is eclipse black with a blue accent. I have got the second type. The lid of this laptop is made of hard textured plastic material with a blue accent Dell logo on it.

And, the interior is made of smooth matte black plastic and the same for bottom cover. Furthermore, on the interior, you can see the blue accent around the touchpad, on the keys, and throughout the machine. All the edges are smooth and the corners are rounded. Overall, the build quality is mostly okay for the plastic laptop.

Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of the laptop are 36.55 cms (14.4 inches) in width, 25.4 cms (10 inches) in depth, and 2.16 cms (0.85 inches) in height. Furthermore, I have also tested the weight of this laptop using a propert weight meter. The weight of this laptop as follows.

  • Laptop only: 5 lbs (2.3 kg)
  • Laptop with Charging cables: 6.54 lbs (3 kg)

By checking the laptop weight with the charger, My intention is to give you an idea of how heavy is this to carry. When compared to other gaming laptops, I found it thicker than Razer Blade Pro 17 (1.99 cms), MSI GS65 Stealth-004 (1.79 cms), Dell Alienware m15 R2 (2.01 cms), and Lenovo Legion 7i (2 cms).

Display Quality and Color Reproduction

Size and Quality

The 15.36-inch 1080p 120Hz display of Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop.

The Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop has a 15.6-inch 1080p 120Hz non-touch display. It has good viewing angles, thanks to the IPS panel. In addition to that, it reflects minimum lights, thanks to the anti-glare. It has no G-Sync available, but it isn't much necessary here as the display refresh rate is 120Hz. The screen is surrounded by 10 mm thin side bezels.

Color Reproduction Efficiency

The color reproduction efficiency is measured by testing the color gamut results. There are plenty of tools available to conduct such tests, but I have used the PRO version of Spyder 5. The Dell G3 3500 display's color gamut results are shown in the below image.

So, in terms of the color reproduction efficiency, the results are a little below average.

Is the display enough bright?

My review unit of Dell G3 3500 reached 246 Nits at 100% of screen brightness at the center and found a contrast ratio of 840:1. So, the display falls below an average in terms of brightness but has a good contrast ratio.

Overall, I found the display is quite poor when compared to Lenovo Legion 7i, Dell Alienware m15 R2 (not in contrast ratio), and Razer Blade Pro 17 gaming laptops.

Screen Flex

The screen is pretty sturdy when tested for flex due to the thick plastic lid.

When intentionally moved the screen up and down, I found little flex there. But, as the lid is made of thick plastic, the screen feels quite solid enough, not problematic during normal use.

The flex, I think occurred due to the little short 145-degree hinge placed in the center as shown in the below image.

I did get open this laptop using one finger

Well, Initially, it was slightly problematic to open it using one finger which reflects the uneven distribution of the weight across the hinge. But, over time, the issue was resolved. Now, I am able to open it with no issues.

Overall, I found it below in terms of the hinge strength and weight distribution, when compared to Razer Blade Pro 17, Lenovo Legion 7i, and Dell Alienware m15 R2. But, nearly similar good to MSI GS65 Stealth-004.

Keyboard – Tactile, Flex, Build, and RGB Backlit?

The keyboard flex was tested by pressing it down hard with fair pressure.

The keyboard has black keys with blue fonts on it. In addition to that, the WASD keys are highlighted to easily distinguish them among the other keys. Furthermore, the flat square keys are average in size. They have black color with blue font on. The island of the keyboard is made of a plastic material. So, I expect some flex there.

When intentionally pressed the keyboard down hard with fair pressure, I have found some keyboard flex. Also, it was extended to the palm rest area and I have felt a little of it during normal typing. But, to be frank, It hasn't stopped or distracted me.

Per-Key Blue Backlit

My review unit has 2 levels of per-key blue backlit available. But, other units have also per-key RGB backlit. The backlit is enough bright to illuminates the secondary key functions also.

The keyboard is tactile

Typing on the keyboard is pretty good experience with some shallow feeling.

Typing on the keyboard of the Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop was a good experience for me, but I have also got some shallow feeling. However, overall good, thanks to the tactile feedback. The keys were traveling consistent 1.45mm distance down. Typing on the keyboard is an average noisy. In addition to that, I also noticed slight flex but found not problematic.

Not a Big Fan of Small Arrow Keys

The Dell G3's keyboard got the 4 little smaller arrow keys. I really don't like the small arrow keys as the chances of getting mistakenly press are more. There is no other key I found poorly placed on this keyboard. When compared in terms of arrow keys to Razer Blade Pro 17, MSI GS65 Stealth-004, Dell Alienware m15 R2, and Lenovo Legion 7i, this laptop falls behind.

Precision Touchpad

The precision touchpad is smooth, responsive, and accurate, and it's made of plastic. But, I found it a bit harder to press it for click. The touchpad clicks down anywhere and also it got two buttons integrated with it below. The click sound is little audible but not distracting during normal use.

In size, I found it almost 4.1 inches wider. So, nearly the same in size when compared to the touchpad of MSI GS65 (4.1 x 2.7 inches), Lenovo Legion 7i (4.13 x 2.76 inches), and Dell Alienware (4.1 x 2.36 inches) gaming laptops. But, smaller than Razer Blade Pro 17's (5 x 3 inches).

Furthermore, Like Lenovo ThinkPad T490, this laptop has no pointer nub. Although, it doesn't required even.

But, to get a decent gaming experience, I recommend buying an external dedicated gaming mouse.

Fingerprints on the Surface

The interior is a fingerprint magnet. But, the smooth surface allows to clean it easily.

Fingerprints were shown up fairly easily on the matte black plastic interior as it is smooth. But, it's easy to clean using the micro-fiber cloth. On the alpine white interior of Dell G3 3500, I expect no fingerprints but at the same time, the white color may turn a little yellowish at some points over the use, and that's not the case in this laptop.

Processor, Graphics, and RAM

I have removed the bottom cover. Look over there at CPU and GPU.

I have just removed the bottom case to visualize the CPU and GPU chips better. But, I think, and you might probably have seen that it's not possible to see. But, that's not a matter.

Coming back to the topic, The Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop is powered by an Intel Core i5-10300H Comet Lake processor with NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti GPU to speed up the task smoothly. In addition to that, this machine has got 2933MHz DDR4 8GB Dual Channel RAM which can also be expanded to 16GB. So, in terms of multitasking, this laptop is pretty fine.

Furthermore, to make the laptop faster, Dell has provided 256GB PCIe-based SSD storage in addition to 1TB of 5400 RPM hard disk. So, the files are really going to load quicker.

CineBench R20 Score

To check the CPU performance, I have conducted the 3 runs of Cinebench R20 for stress and gaming tests in different modes. Cinebench is a tool that runs a test and gives the results in the form of the score in order to show the performance of CPU's single and multi core. The average results of the 3 run shown in the below image.

In the stock mode, both of the single and multi-core scores are less. When increased the test mode to performance mode, the single-core score has raised to 414 from 413 and the multi-core score has raised to 2188 from 2142. So, not a noticeable increase.

In the performance mode with 0.15v CPU undervolting, the single-core score raised to 415 from 414 shows a very minor change. And, the multi-core score has raised to 2401 from 2188 shows a big change.

So, the Cinebench score concluded that undervolting the CPU in the performance mode shows a quite better improvement in the multi core performance.

Average CPU and GPU Clock Speed

The CPU and GPU clock speeds were tested in different modes of stress and gaming tests. For the gaming test, I have played The Witcher 3. And, the same was followed for CPU TDP measurements.

During the stress test in stock mode, the CPU and GPU clock speeds were recorded to 3111 and 1385MHz, respectively. In the performance mode, the speeds were raised to 3167 and 1472MHz for CPU and GPU. So, not quite noticeable improvements in CPU speed.

During the same test in performance mode with 0.15v CPU undervolting, the CPU and GPU speeds were raised to 3623 and 1457MHz respectively. In the same tests, the use of a cooling pad has shown a quite big change in GPU speed but no noticeable change in CPU. The CPU and GPU speeds were raised to 1542 and 3633MHz, respectively.

In addition to that, during the gaming test in stock mode, The CPU and GPU clock speeds were 2841 and 1623MHz respectively. In the performance mode, the speeds were raised to 3305 and 1591MHz. That shows a quite big improvement in CPU performance in gaming, but a noticeable reduction in GPU performance.

During the same test in the same mode with 0.15v undervolted CPU, the CPU clock speed has noticeably raised to 3892 from 3305MHz. And, GPU has shown a little decline in the speed. In the same test, the use of a cooling pad has little raised the CPU clock speed to 3976MHz. At the same time, the GPU clock speed has raised to 1684MHz from 1588MHz.

So, you can improve the CPU and GPU performance by undervolting the CPU. It can also be little further improved by the use of a cooling pad. That's the outcome of this CPU and GPU clock speed test conducted for 3 runs.

Average CPU and GPU TDP Watts

First of all, what is the TDP? TDP is the acronym of the Thermal Design Power in watts which indicates the power consumption by chip under a maximum load. So, to test the TDP of CPU and GPU of Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop, I have performed the 3 runs in different modes of stress and gaming tests.

During the stress test in stock mode, the TDPs of CPU and GPU were stopped to 33.7 and 51.3 watts, respectively. The same test in a performance mode has shown a thin change of 0.1 watts raise in CPU TDP and a noticeable raise of 3 watts in GPU TDP.

In addition to that, 0.15v undervolting the CPU in the same test and mode has set the CPU TDP to 33.7 watts and no change in GPU TDP. In the same test, the use of a cooling pad has shown no change in CPU TDP and 0.2 watts increase in GPU TDP.

During the gaming test in stock mode, the CPU and GPU TDPs were reached 23.1 and 54.7 watts, respectively. In the same test in performance mode, the CPU has shown a noticeable increase of 10.7 watts in the CPU TDP and only 0.1 watts increase in GPU. Further 0.15v CPU undervoting has reflected no change. Also, the use of a cooling pad was found useless here.

So, Overall, I found not a big impact on CPU and GPU TDP during different modes of the test except for stock mode.

Gaming Benchmarks [For Max Setting only]

I have played the following games for each available gaming-settings for half an hour to measure the FPS (frames per seconds) data. In this section, I will show the FPS data for maximum settings only. The data for the rest of the gaming-settings are shown later in this article.

Video Editing Performance

The video editing performance was tested in two ways as follows.

  • Average of the video export time
  • Multitasking during video export

Average of the Video Export time

I have edited and exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 present using Adobe Premier CC on this Dell G3 3500 machine. The test was conducted for 5 times to see the average.

As you can see in the above image that the video was exported in on average nearly 16 minutes (954 seconds). Well, this laptop took quite a long time when compared to Lenovo Legion 7i (597 seconds), Razer Blade Pro 17 (585 seconds), and MSI GS65 Stealth-004 (591 seconds).

For me, it's weird that despite Dell Alienware m15 R2 has quite higher specs, it has exported the same video in the same preset in on average 951 seconds - A quite similar result to this machine.

Multitasking during video export

The motive to conduct this test wasn't other than to rate the smoothness of this laptop when the CPU is busy with intense work. I have checked the following during the video export, the touchpad, keyboard, and laptop's response time.

Overall, I found quite good results, thanks to the Intel Core i5 CPU, NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GPU, 2933MHz 8GB DDR4 RAM, and 256GB SSD Storage.

Thermal Performance

The thermal performance of this Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop was tested by conducting the gaming and stress tests at different performance modes. In addition to that, the average data of the 3 runs are shown here. For gaming, I have played The Witcher 3.

The aim of conducting this test was to show you the maximum temperature this one can reach. In addition to that, the effect of CPU undervolting and the use of cooling pad on CPU and GPU temperature during gaming and high processor-intensive tasks.

During the idle-quiet mode, the CPU and GPU were at 50 and 49 degrees C, respectively. And, in idle-optimized mode, both were found at 45 and 46 degrees C.

Stress Tests Result

During the stress test in stock mode, the CPU and GPU were reached 99 and 86 degrees C, respectively. The same test in a performance mode has shown a little reduction in the temperature. Both were found at 96 and 85. So, not a quite jump noticed.

In addition to that, the same test in the same mode with 0.15v undervolted CPU has shown negligible change on both' temperatures. But, in the same test in the same mode, the use of a cooling pad has noticeably reduced the CPU temperature to 84 from 95 degrees C and GPU to 73 from 85 degrees C.

Gaming Tests Result

During the gaming test in stock mode, Both CPU and GPU were at 86 and 85 degrees C temperature. The same test in a performance mode has increased the CPU temperature to 92 degrees C and no change in GPU temperature.

In addition to that, 0.15v undervolting the CPU has reduced both CPU and GPU temperature to 87 from 92 and 82 from 85 degrees C. And, in the same test in the same mode, the use of a cooling pad has reduced the both' temperatures quite noticeably. The temperatures were at 79 for CPU and 71 for GPU.

So, overall, undervolting the CPU alone isn't much impactful. The use of cooling pad in Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop shown a quite improved results in the thermal performance of CPU and GPU.

Keyboard Temperature

The temperature of the keyboard was measured externally to show you how it feels when actually putting your hands on it during gaming or processor-intensive tasks.

At idle, the temperature of the keyboard was at mid 30 degrees C. The palm rest found pretty cool.

During the CPU+GPU stress test at stock fan, the exterior was getting mid 50 C.

During CPU and GPU stress test at stock fans, the temperature was getting a little 50s. But, at the same time, the WASD keys found not too hot.

During the gaming at max fans, the results were the same. However, it is to note that some of the keys were started feeling uncomfortable but weren't too hot to touch.

Fans Performance

The fans' performance was tested to check their noise during different performance modes.

At Idle-quiet and optimized mode, the fans were found completely silent. During The Witcher 3 at stock fans, they were slightly audible. During CPU+GPU Stress tests at stock fans, the fans were slightly audible similar to the gaming. In addition to that, the same test at max fans has made the fans average louder.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera is fitted on the top bezel. Thanks to dell, It has fitted it despite thin top bezels. However, the camera is just okay. Furthermore, it has no Windows Hello support. In addition to that, the microphone quality is pretty average.

When the fans speed set to maximum, the microphone of this Dell G3 3500 laptop was catching my voice average clearly. So, overall, not incredible but pretty average results were found.

Speakers

The 2 speakers are on the sides at the front corners. While listening to YouTube videos, they sound a bit tiny. But, in terms of the loudness, they are pretty enough at maximum volume. Further quality check on the LatencyMon has shown little more disappointing results.

In addition to that, I have checked the speed of the full-size SD slot using the CrystalDiskMark tool. The results are in the below image.

On Back Side

Ports on the backside of the machine.

There are two air exhausts at the corners and a G3 logo in the middle of the back of the Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop. Compared to the back, the front has nothing except a smooth plastic.

Battery

The battery life was tested for normal and gaming-tasks. For the normal-task, I have watched the YouTube videos at 50% screen brightness, background apps disabled, and keyboard lighting off. And, for gaming, I have played The Witcher 3 at medium settings and FPS set to 30.

So, despite the low battery, the gaming has survived for 1 hour and 15 minutes on it.

Storage

Note that I have only checked the SSD storage speed. Because I think it's worthless to test the HDD speed as HDDs always contribute to the slower performance and speed. The tool I have used to check the speed is CrystalDiskMark.

In addition to that, the test has checked for full SSD storage, not a partitioned part. The results of the speed test are in the below image.

Based on the CrystalDiskMark tool's result, the storage looks quite speedy like other gaming laptops I have tested. Next, I will finish by showing you some gaming benchmarks tested for all available gaming-settings on Dell G3 3500.
