Hello, guys. So, today, In this article, I'm gonna review the Dell Inspiron 14 3493 laptop in-depth. In addition to that, I will also compare it with other office laptops I have tested to make you clear that is it you should consider buying?

So, let's get started. But, before I proceed, read out my article on an explanation of laptop specs to get the basic idea about the internals.

In addition to that, the review unit of this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 laptop that I have received from New Delhi was restricted to touch the internals like in the case of Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 laptop. The specs of my review unit are as follows.

The Build Quality and Material

All plastic build Dell Inspiron 14 3493 laptop has plastic lid and textured plastic interior.

This Inspiron 14 3493 laptop is made of plastic. The lid is pretty smooth, and the interior is made of textured black plastic. So, this matte black plastic finish found pretty solid and sturdy enough.

Overall, the build quality is pretty similar to Asus VivoBook Ultra 15.

Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of the laptop are 34 cms (13.4-inch) in width, 24.2 cms (9.5-inch) in depth, and 2.1 cms (0.8-inch) in height. In addition to that, I have also measured the weight using a propert weight meter for the laptop alone and with charging accessories.

  • For laptop only: 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs)
  • For laptop with charging accessories: 1.82 kg (4 lbs)

The purpose of measuring the weight with accessories is to give you an idea about the weight that may need to carry while traveling. So, this laptop is lighter than Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 (1.8), but heavier than Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (1.35 kg). In the chart below, I have compared its weight with other laptop of same and below price than this one.

Display Quality and Color Reproduction

Size and Quality

The 14-inch 1080p60Hz WVA display of Dell Inspiron 14 3493 laptop.

This laptop has a 14-inch 1080p 60Hz non-touch display with a WVA panel. Don't expect good viewing angles as it's not an IPS display. In addition to that, It is surrounded by almost 14mm thick bezels from the sides. That's a bit much.

So, overall, the display quality falls behind when compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon, Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513, Dell G3 3500, Acer Nitro 5, and other laptops I have reviewed.

Color Reproduction Efficiency

I have measured the screen color gamut to measure color reproduction efficiency. For that, I have used the Spyder 5 PRO. And the SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC results for this WVA (wide viewing angles) display are in the below image.

As shown in the above image, with 36% of NTSC, 51% of Adobe RGB, and 53% of SRGB, the display falls on the poor side. So, overall, not good results for content creators like professional photo & video editors, drawing-artists, and like. The display is just okay for normal-uses.

When compared to the other laptops of similar price range, I found this machine at the second last position out of 6. So, a quite poor color gamut display this laptop does have.

As per the above chart, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has a quite better display in terms of color gamut. In addition to that, HP 14 DK0093AU and Acer Aspire 3 A315 has also. In this comparison, Lenovo's IdeaPad S145 found to have the most poor display in terms of color gamut out of 6 laptops I have compared.

Is the display enough bright?

This Inspiron 3493's display reached 224 Nits at 100% of screen brightness at the center. So, the display is quite below an average in terms of nits. When compared to other 5 laptops of the same price range, I found this one at the last position. See the comparison in the below chart.

In this comparison, Mi notebook 14 has highest display nits (250 Nits) followed by Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 (245 Nits), Acer Aspire 3 A315 (236 Nits). The other 3 laptops have very poor display nits value but higher than this laptop.

At thanalysis, we recommend at least 300 nits for the display to properly see the content of screen during sun light. Both Lenovo IdeaPad S540 and ThinkPad E14 have average display nits, 299 and 306, respectively. At the same time, their prices are also quite higher.

Furthermore, this WVA display has a higher contrast ratio 1000:1. The value is at average when compared to other laptops. So, overall, it's falling on the dimmer side in terms of brightness. You gonna face a problem while working in low ambient light.

Screen Flex

When intentionally moved the screen up and down with fingers with fair pressure, I found some flex there. But, surprisingly, the flex was quite limited. I mean, it has stopped after some point. The flex is due to the plastic lid. But, it was not a problem during normal use.

In addition to that, the 145-degree hinge is placed at the back corners that reduce the possibilities of flex at the bottom of the screen. Furthermore, this laptop doesn't open with one finger that demonstrates the unevenly distributed weight across the hinge.

Keyboard – Tactile, Flex, Build, and RGB Backlit?

Keyboard Flex and Build Quality

The keyboard has little to no flex. It feels almost solid.

The island of the keyboard is made of textured plastic. The black color keys have white fonts on it. And, in my experience, I found them a little smaller in size when compared to Mi Notebook and Asus VivoBook's keyboards.

In addition to that, there is a very little flex there when I have pressed the keyboard down hard using fingers with fair pressure. It's not even noticeable compared to Asus VivoBook and Mi's 14 Notebook. Furthermore, like gaming laptops, there are WASD keys with any kind of accenting around them.

So, overall, I found the keyboard pretty sturdy and solid enough.

Backlit?

No. This keyboard has no backlit. So, to be frank, it's better to consider either Mi Notebook 14 Horizon or Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513. Because of no backlit, you may gonna have a problem at night or a low ambient room.

Typing Experience

Typing experience consists of many things like tactile feedback, clicky keys, typing noise, shallow feeling for poor keyboard, and many more.

During typing a paragraph on Notepad, I found the keys were traveling almost 1.4mm distance when pressed. The tactile feedback wasn't incredible. It was just okay and luckily consistent. While testing the Mi Notebook's keyboard, I was getting inconsistent tactile feedback. But, I got some shallow feeling that I would like to tell you.

In addition to that, the power button is placed almost outside of the keyboard area. It is just next to it. So, there are no chances of the accidental wrong press during typing. Nowadays, most of the laptops that I have tested comes with a power button inside the keyboard - mainly next to the Delete-key.

So, overall, I found it above an average in terms of typing experience with some shallow feeling.

Small and Messy 4 Arrow Keys

The keyboard of this Inspiron 14 3493 laptop has 4 smaller and messy arrow keys.

I always complained about 4 arrow keys in every Dell laptop I have reviewed. And I have the same complaint about this laptop. The 4 arrow keys are smaller and placed very close to each other. So, the accidental wrong press will be frequent.

So, If you ignore the backlit then, this one has the best keyboard when compared to Asus VivoBook or Mi laptops of under 50,000 range. But, for those who consider the backlit, I recommend going for Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513.

Precision Touchpad?

Smooth and responsive 4.1-inch wider touchpad.

The 4.1-inch wider touchpad of this laptop is made of plastic, and it is found smooth and responsive. But, it was not accurate at handling the gestures. Furthermore, as it's inaccurate, it can't be Windows recognized precision unit, and it's not even.

For precision touchpad, you should go for Acer Aspire 3 A315 laptop. It's price is nearly similar to this one.

In addition to that, Unlike most of the laptops in the range of around 50,000, this touchpad doesn't click down anywhere. It has two separate buttons to register the click. The clicks are little audible but wasn't distracting me.

So, overall, the touchpad is just okay when compared to other machines. I recommend buying an external mouse.

Fingerprints on the Smooth Surface

No fingerprints on the matte black finish.

Despite the textured plastic interior, fingerprints show up a little bit on it. It is to note that they aren't directly noticeable. I am saying this after 3 days of heavy use. And I have a habit of using palm rest excessively during typing. So, I accept that this trick should work with this laptop also, like other machines.

In addition to that, as the laptop finish is matte black, I have noticed no color change. I am telling you because while reviewing the Alienware m15 R2 gaming laptop, I have noticed that some parts of the palm rest turned slightly yellowish over the use. But, that's not the case with this laptop.

RAM

This Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has 8GB of 2666MHz single channel DDR4 RAM. And, like Mi Notebook 14 and Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513, it's not upgradable. But, the big amount of memory allows you to do smooth and better multitasking on it compared to 4GB RAM.

See below the other laptops that allows you to upgrade the RAM.

  • HP 14 DK0093AU (review) – 2400MHz 8GB Single Channel DDR4 – Upgrade to 16GB
  • Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (review) – 2400MHz 8GB Single Channel DDR4 – Upgrade to 12GB

Furthermore, Dual channel RAM gives better performance than the Single channel one. Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 has Dual channel 3200MHz DDR4 RAM with a one disadvantage of no upgrade option.

Processor and Graphics

As my review unit was restricted from touching the internals, I am unable to remove the bottom cover. But that didn’t stop me from getting internals’ performance.

An Intel Core i5 processor and an integrated Intel UHD GPU are powering the laptop to give you high performance.

To make the laptop even faster, Dell has put a 256GB of PCIe-based SSD storage in addition to 1TB of 5400RPM hard disk. So, your project files are really going to load faster. Furthermore, SSD allows you to quickly edit big files smoothly.

Now, let's check some of the CPU and GPU benchmarks.

Cinebench R20 Score

I have taken 3 runs of Cinebench to show you an average of it. Furthermore, Cinebench is a tool used to measure CPU performance.

As this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 is an Intel-powered laptop, it's possible to do CPU undervolting (UV). But, as there's no dedicated graphics, it's not capable of gaming. And CPU UV is helpful when you're supposed to perform the processor-intensive task. So, I have checked the Cinebench score for with and without a cooling pad.

Without a cooling pad, Cinebench has ended up with 443 single and 1751 multi-core scores. With the use of a cooling pad, the results were same. So, overall, pretty average Cinebench score. And, I found the cooling pad ineffective in CPU performance. Next, let's look at the CPU clock speed.

In addition to that, when compared in terms of Cinebench R20 single core score to other 5 laptops of same price range, I found this one at the 1st position followed by Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 (441) and Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (441). Despite Intel's Core i7 CPU, Mi Notebook has gained just 371 single core score. See the comparison in the below chart.

When compared in terms of Cinebench R20 multi core score to the same laptops, I found this one at the second position. In this comparison, Asus VivoBook has gained 1st position. Again, despite Core i7 CPU, Mi's Notebook has just achieved 871 multi core score. See the comparison in the following chart.

So, overall, this laptop is quite powerful, thanks to the Intel Core i5 CPU. Let's check Geekbench 5 scores. Now, the question what these scores tell.

First of all, During the testing, Cinebench R20 puts an excessive load on the CPU to execute the tasks. By doing so, it will check the machine's cooling solution also which other tool doesn't except for 3DMark. So, when the CPU comes under a heavy load, thermal throttling takes place in the processor and it reduces the performance.

For example, If your CPU has max clock speeds of 4.5GHx, then you will reach 4.1GHz max during gaming or stress tests. The reason for not picking the limit is thermal throttling. So, If the Cinebench R20 score of the laptop is high means the laptop has high powerful CPU with a better thermal management.

In our case, the multi core score is 1752, However it's quite higher as per the chart shown above. And, Asus VivoBook is even higher than this one. That demonstrates that the VivoBook something optimized inside which this laptop has not.

Geekbench 5 Score

When tested this laptop using Geekbench 5, it has scored 1161 for single core and 3476 for multi core. In the following chart, I have compared both scores with other 5 laptops of same price to give you an idea of what to expect from this laptop.

In the Single core score comparison, I found this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 at the 1st position followed by Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (1069 score) and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (967 score). HP DK0093AU has just scored 674 and found at the last place.

In this Multi core score comparison, I found this Inspiron at the second place after Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (3851). Here, again, Mi Notebook has found at the 3rd place with a score of 3031. HP DK0093AU is again found at the last place with 2718 of lowest multi core score.

Now, what does this score tells? It tells the performance of the laptop. The higher the score, the higher the performance. Here, you have to consider the multi core score. Look, Geekbench doesn't put an excessive load on the CPU like Cinebench R20. And, Geekbench consider mainly productivity tasks like emailing, browsing, multitasking, and etc to evaluate the hardware.

And, such ways cannot give you an idea about the cooling solution. Because tiny tasks doesn't make much weight on the CPU. Hence, If the laptop has higher Geekbench multi core score means its capability for productivity is much better. But, at the same time, information about thermal throttling and cooling solution will remain unanswered by this tool.

Hence, for gamers and programmers, Geekbench isn't a tool to evaluate the laptop. It's better to consider Cinebench here. And, for normal users or office users, this one seems to be getting the job done.

PCMark 10 Score

When tested this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 for PCMark 10 benchmarks, I found this laptop at the 3rd position with a score of 4091 out of 6 other laptops of nearly similar price. In this comparison, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has gained the first position (4391 score) followed by Lenovo IdeaPad S145 (4386 score).

And, in terms of position, for HP DK0093AU laptop, I found similar results to Cinebench R20 and Geekbench 5. It has just scored 3789. Now, let's check for 3DMark Fire Strike comparison.

PCMark 10 scores involves tasks we do everyday like web browsing, video conferencing, some office work on MS Excel, or entire MS Office, digital content creations like video and photo editing. It also checks for gaming, but for non-gaming laptops I skip that test.

So, PCMark 10 score is also similar to the Geekbench. It's true that the way they choose to evaluate the hardware is different but the same information you won't get in its score that you get in the Cinebench R20.

In out case, the comparison of this laptop with other similar priced laptops revealed that Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has highest PCMark 10 score. That means the better productivity. But, at the same time, if you look at Cinebench multi core score, you will find it at last and this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 at 2nd position.

It means Mi's notebook has a quite poor cooling solution than this laptop. So, for heavy users shouldn't buy it. At the same time, It has a highest productivity capabilities due to Core i7 CPU and MX330 GPU.

3DMark Fire Strike Score

When tested this laptop for 3DMark Fire Strike benchmarks, I found this laptop at last position with a score of 815. 3DMark represents the graphics rendering capabilities of the laptop. So, Intel UHD GPU isn't a powerful GPU like NVIDIA's MX and GTX series GPUs or AMD's RX series.

In this comparison, Mi Notebook is found at the first position (3912 score) due to its MX330 NVIDIA Graphics with 2GB of memory. Asus VivoBook is following it (3726) due to its AMD Radeon RX Vega 6 Graphics.

Average CPU Clock Speed

The CPU clock speed was measured by performing the stress test using AIDA64. The results of an average of 3 runs are in the below image.

In a stress test with turbo boost at an auto fan without a cooling pad, the CPU clock speed was 3378MHz. The same test with a cooling pad has raised it to 3386MHz. So, not a noticeable change in CPU performance.

In addition to that, It's useless to measure the GPU clock speed. Because it's integrated on the same silicon board. It's not for heavy tasks. Hence, it's better to skip.

Furthermore, this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 machine is neither a gaming laptop, not it has even MX series NVIDIA GPU. So, it's void to conduct the CPU and GPU TDP test.

As gaming requires more resources, it's become worthy of measuring the TDP and different ways to reduce it. But that's not the case with this machine. So, for non-gaming laptops like this one and Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513, I have skipped the TDP test.

Video Editing Performance

The video editing performance of this laptop was tested by two ways.

  • Average of the video export time
  • Multitasking during video export

Average of the video export time

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

So, during my test of video export using Adobe Premier CC, this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has exported the video in an average of 30 minutes and 11 seconds. That's too much. See in the below chart where I have compared it with other 5 laptops of nearly same price.

In this comparison, this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 is found at second last position. Surprisingly, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon is at the position with 1100 seconds. If you see the overall comparison then all laptops except Mi Notebook have taken too much time for video export. And, at the same time, this one has also higher screen color gamut values than this one. So, that makes Notebook 14 much better than this laptop for video editing.

Multitasking during video export

The motive to conduct this test wasn’t other than to rate the smoothness of this laptop when the CPU is busy with intense work. I have checked the following during the video export, the touchpad, keyboard, and laptop’s response time.

So, During this test, I found this laptop almost laggy. As it has no dedicated NVIDIA graphics, not even of the MX series, the expectation of good performance is useless. Overall, I found it below an average for video editing like Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 when compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon edition.

Thermal Performance

This test was performed to tell you whether the cooling pad is efficient in temperature reduction with stable or increased performance. For the stress test, I have used the AIDA64 tool. So, the results are in the below image.

At idle, the CPU was 46 degrees C hot. During the stress test at an auto fan without a cooling pad, it was 83 degrees C hot. And, during the same test with a cooling pad, it was 81 degrees C hot.

So, the use of a cooling pad has shown a change of 2 degrees - to be frank - it's a little bit. Hence, my recommendations are on the "Not to buy" part. However, if you're concerned about such a minor change then, you can go for it since your money won't be wasted at all.

Furthermore, in the following chart, I have compared the temperatures of laptops (the same and below price) measured during stress test at an auto fan.

As per the above chart, this laptop found to have an average thermal management. It's just okay. This temperature readings gives you an idea about its temperature when you are dealing with processor-intensive tasks like video editing, programming, and like.

In this comparison, Mi notebook 14 is found to be bad in cooling solution (86 degrees Celsius) and Acer Aspire 3 is good (78 degrees Celsius).

Laptop’s Exterior Temperature

At idle at an auto fan, both the palm rest and a keyboard found pretty cool.

During the stress test at an auto fan without a cooling pad, the palm rest was pretty cool. The middle of the keyboard found at mid 50 degrees C. And, the top side of the base that is above the keyboard reached mid 60 C. In addition to that, the sides of the middle of the keyboard were nearly 35 C, that's pretty cool.

It is to note that during the stress test, no keys were found uncomfortable to touch. And, that's the good about its thermal management.

During the same test with the use of a cooling pad, I found nearly similar results. So, in terms of the thermals, a cooling pad again a little bit effective.

Fans Performance

Fans noise level at idle and during stress tests at auto fan.

At idle, the fan was 35.4dB louder - completely silent in the conference room. During the stress test at an auto fan, it was 50.7dB louder - heard but not distracting me. In addition to that, Dell has put only 1 fan to cool the CPU down.

Furthermore, see in the below chart where I have compared the fan’s noise produced by other laptops.

As per the above chart, this Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has the most noisy fan (50.7 dB) when compared to other laptops of same price range. Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has the most silent fan (47.1dB) followed by Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (47.9dB). See, you are going to experience such level of fan noise while dealing with processor-intensive tasks only.

In addition to that, the gaming laptops have the most noisy fans. If you read my review articles of Dell Alienware m15 R2, Lenovo Legion 7i, MSI GS65 Stealth-004, and Razer Blade Pro 17 gaming laptops, you will find the noise emitted by their fans was reaching 60dB. And, that’s become equal to the noise emitted by washing machine, hair dryer, and electric toothbrush.

But, this one isn't a gaming laptop. Such scenario is not the case with this laptop.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera and a microphone

The 720p camera and microphone with status LED are placed at the top thick bezel and no Windows Hello support here. The camera quality is too poor. And, the microphone was also not different in terms of quality. The camera of my review unit has captured pretty high noise.

But, something good about it is that the camera isn't coming separately like Mi Notebook 14 Horizon. When compared to other 5 laptops of same price range, I found this one at the last position. See it in the following chart.

In this comparison, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon, Lenovo IdeaPad S145, and Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 have secured the 1st position. When compared in terms of microphone quality to the same laptops, the results are pretty same. See in the below chart.

So, overall, both camera and a microphone are below an average with ratings 3 out 10. For better camera and a microphone, you should go with Asus VivoBook Ultra 15.

Speakers

The 2 down-firing speakers have placed the front side underneath the laptop. They are not enough-loud at maximum volume. In addition to that, while watching YouTube videos, my Digitech's sound level meter has measured the 79dB of sound level. Furthermore, they were heard bit tiny also.

As shown in the chart, this laptop is at the 3rd position out of 6. In addition to that, it is bit unclear to hear when compared in term of sound clarity to Asus VivoBook Ultra 15, HP 14 DK0093AU, and Acer Aspire 3 A315. Here, in this comparison, Asus VivoBook found to have louder (84dB) and clear speakers than this Dell Inspiron 14 3493. So, better to go with that, not with this one if speakers are much important for you than other specs.

Overall, in terms speakers, it's not all bad for video conference.

This Inspiron 14 3493 has air intake vents placed underneath the laptop and directly above the fan. Such a mechanism helps to cool the temperature a bit.

Battery

To be honest, this 14 3493 hasn't lasted for a long during the stress test. The 42Wh 3 Cell battery has lasted for 1 hour and 18 minutes. And during continuous YouTube watching with 50% of screen brightness and background apps disabled, It has lasted for 6 hours and 26 minutes.

When compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon laptop, it sucks. Because a 48Wh battery is powering the Mi Notebook and, it has lasted for 7 hours and 29 minutes. Overall, the battery life is about average in life and quality. But, it has got nearly similar results to Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 laptop.

When compared in terms of battery capacity to the same laptops, I found this notebook is ranking on the 4th position out of 6. See in the below chart.

In all of these comparisons, I found Mi Notebook 14 has a quite higher battery life compared to other laptops due to its 48Wh capacity battery. And, Acer Aspire 3 has very short battery life due to its 36Wh low capacity battery.

So, overall, this laptop has average capacity battery and it has lasted for average time.

Storage

This laptop has got 256GB of PCIe-based solid-state storage in addition to 1TB of 5400RPM HDD to provide a possible high performance. I have used the CrystalDiskMark tool to test its speed. And the results are below.

It's too fast. I got on average 1671MB/sec of reading speed and 859MB/sec write speed. So, this is the end of this article. I haven't checked the gaming benchmarks as Inspiron 3493's Intel UHD GPU isn't capable of it. It is even not capable of running the emulators on it smoothly.

Final Thoughts

This Dell Inspiron 3493 laptop gives a very high performance under ₹60K. Despite all-plastic build, it's sturdy. The 14-inch FHD display has WVA panel which doesn't offer good viewing angles. In addition to that, both the screen colour gamut and display nits are on the poor side. That makes this laptop useless for professional photo and video editing. The tenkeyless keyboard gives consistent feedback. However, the experience isn't incredible compared to the price. The plastic touchpad is smooth and responsive, but not accurate, which is the main con of having this machine. Furthermore, it doesn't support Windows precision drivers, too.

The Intel Core i5 CPU and thermal management can give you a very high performance, revealed by Cinebench, Geekbench, and several CPU stress tests. Due to no dedicated graphics, it's not easy to perform graphics-intensive tasks like Gaming, Smooth video editing, and graphics rendering. But, that won't stop you from playing lightweight PC games like GTA Vice City, Project IGI, and like.

Next, the camera and microphone are of poor quality. Both are not recommended for video conference. In addition to that, there are many things which have punished this laptop in terms of ranking. Those things are the absence of Wi-Fi 6, USB Type-C, and Thunderbolt port. The speakers are on the boundary in terms of loudness. And, this laptop is too lazy to get it open just by one finger. Overall, I've rated this budget laptop 35.23 out of 100, which is little below-average.
