Hello, guys. Today, in this article, I am going to review the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition 14 laptop that I have received from New Delhi. I will approach every corner possible to tell you that, is it the laptop you should consider buying?

So, let's get started. But, before I proceed, read my article on the explanation of laptop specs that will give you information about the specs in layman terms. The review unit which I have received for review has specs as follows.

The Build Quality and Material

The all-anodized aluminum build.

This Mi Notebook Horizon 14 comes with a premium look. It's anodized aluminum build. Furthermore, as you can see in the lid, there's no Mi logo, and that makes it a more clean top.

In addition to that, no branding on any sides except the interior gives it a more classy look. Having a metal chassis increases the durability to some extent. But, again, in terms of durability, Lenovo's ThinkPads win the race.

Dimensions and Weight

Laptop's dimension and width.

The dimensions of this Mi Notebook Horizon Edition 14 laptop are 32.13 cms (12.7-inch) in width, 20.68 cms (8.1-inch) in depth, and 1.7 cms (0.7-inch) in height. Besides that, I have also measured its weight using a propert weight meter. The weight is as follows.

  • For laptop: 1.35 kg (3 lbs)
  • For laptop + Charger + Webcam: Almost 1.73 kg (3.8 lbs)

So, it's lightweight to carry when you will be travelling. The purpose here to test the machine's weight with its accessories is to give you an idea of the weight you may need to carry during travelling. It is the most lightweight laptop when compared to other laptops of nearly similar price range. See it in the below chart.

Display Quality and Color Reproduction

Size and Quality

A 14-inch 1080p 60Hz display of Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition.

This Mi Notebook has a 14-inch 1080p 60Hz display. It is surrounded by 3mm slim bezels from the top and both sides. In addition to that, it has good viewing angles and minimal light reflection, thanks to the IPS panel.

Furthermore, It has an MX series NVIDIA GPU instead of RTX or GTX. So, like in the gaming laptops, it's worthless to count G-Sync lack here since this machine is for office use, not for gaming use. Though it can fulfil your gaming needs.

Colour Reproduction Efficiency

The colour reproduction of the laptop is measured by measuring the screen color gamut. For that, several tools are available. But, like in the gaming laptops, I have used Spyder 5 PRO to test it. And below is the SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC results.

So, as you can see, the results are below an average that makes it unworthy for content creators like a photographer and video editors (not in terms of speed). When compared the screen color gamut of this laptop with other machines, this notebook is found at a quite lower position. See it in the below chart.

Is the display enough bright?

Mi Notebook has got 249.6 nits at 100% of screen brightness at the center.

The display of my review unit has reached 249.6 (~250) Nits at 100% of screen brightness at the center. So, not even near to the average bright screen. The display nits of this laptop at max brightness are slightly higher than Acer Nitro 5 AN515 (246.4 nits) and Dell G3 3500 (246 nits).

When compared to other laptops of same price range, it has secured the 1st position. See it in the below chart. Lenovo ThinkPad E14 and Lenovo IdeaPad S540 have higher display nits but they have higher price also than this notebook.

In addition to that, my tests have revealed that the display has 940:1 contrast ratio. Similar results I found to Acer Nitro 5 AN515 (920:1).

Screen Flex

Some screen flex on Mi Notebook's display.

When intentionally moved the screen using fingers up and down, I found little flex there. But, thanks to the aluminum lid, the display found pretty solid enough. In addition to that, my review unit was easily opened up with just one finger.

This Notebook 14 Horizon edition does open with one finger.

So, overall build feels sturdy and demonstrates the fairly evenly distributed weight across the hinges. Furthermore, the hinge runs mostly along the base that adds one more plus point to minimize the screen flex.

Keyboard – Tactile, Flex, Build, and RGB Backlit?

Keyboard Flex and Build Quality

When intentionally pushed the keyboard hard down using fingers at fair pressure, I found little flex there. The island of the keyboard is made of aluminum. But, overall, I found no issue during normal-use, thanks to the metal base.

In addition to that, like other non-gaming laptops, the WASD part isn't highlighted. But, that's not a matter to worry about.

Has it a backlit keyboard?

Mi Notebook 14's keyboard has no backlit.

Unfortunately, the keyboard has no backlit. It feels a bit awkward that this modern laptop has no backlit keyboard. It will be correct to say that keyboard with no backlit accounts for more battery life.

So, in the low lightroom, you gonna definitely have a problem unless you not be familiar with the 10-finger typing. Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 is coming with a 3-level backlit keyboard. And, it has nearly same price to this one. Furthermore, Lenovo IdeaPad S540 has also a backlit keyboard.

Disappointing Typing Experience

Typing on the keyboard is bit more disappointing.

Typing on the keyboard wasn't a good experience for me. This scissor-switch mechanism keyboard has fallen below an average during my testings. The black keys have a white font and gave inconsistent tactile feedback.

In contrast to Mi's claim, I wasn't getting the consistent 1.3mm key-travel. As a result, I have to double-check my typing on some of the keys, especially those near to Enter-key. For tactile keyboard, you should go for Lenovo ThinkPad E14 laptop. Asus VivoBook Ultra 15's keyboard has no tactile feedback despite the same price.

In addition to that, like Dell G3 3500 gaming laptop, I got a bit shallow feeling during typing. So, overall, bad for bloggers, writers, and programmers in terms of the keyboard. If you don't mind the tactile feedback, then it's really the machine made for you, in my opinion.

Small and Badly Placed 2 Arrow Keys

The 2 arrow keys out of 4 are too small and even bad-placed. That may cause an accidental wrong press. In addition to that, the Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys are added secondarily to the arrow keys. But, that's I believe a new normal nowadays for slim 13 or 14-inch laptops.

So, overall, I think Acer Nitro 5 and Dell G3 3500's keyboard is better than this stupid scissor-switch mechanism keyboard.

Precision Touchpad?

Mi Notebook 14 Horizon edition laptop has smooth, responsive, and accurate touchpad. But, it's not a precision unit.

The 4.5-inch wider touchpad is smooth, responsive, and accurate at handling the multi-gestures. But, it's not Windows recognized precision unit. It clicks down anywhere and has no separate buttons. Though they are not required even.

In addition to that, the touchpad bent more when I pressed for click. It was really more than average. It seems like Mi has put some sort of failed component in the Core i7 laptop. So, overall, a bit problematic during normal use in terms of clicks.

For precision touchpad, you should go for Acer Aspire 3 A315 laptop. It's coming at ₹46,000. Lenovo's IdeaPad S540 is also coming with a precision unit, but it has too high price (₹89,990).

And, it's clearly not helpful in gaming. For that, I recommend buying an external gaming mouse.

Fingerprints on the Smooth Surface

No fingerprints have shown up on the metal surface.

Fingerprints don't really show up on the smooth silver finish. It might be if Xiaomi has provided the black variant. In addition to that, Unlike Alienware m15 R2, its look in terms of color hasn't changed over the use. In Alienware's white variant, I found it a little yellowish at some parts over-the-use, but that's not the case with this laptop.

RAM

This Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has 8GB of 2666MHz single channel DDR4 RAM. The amount enough big for smooth multitasking. Although, like many laptops, you won't be able to upgrade it.

No upgrade option is bit awkward in this laptop. In addition to that, below I have compared the RAM of other laptops of the same and below price range of ₹60,000.

  • Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 - 3200MHz 8GB Dual Chanel DDR4 - Upgrade to 12GB
  • Acer Aspire 3 A315 - 2666MHz 8GB Single Channel DDR4 - Upgrade to 12GB
  • Dell Inspiron 14 3493 - 2666MHz 8GB Single Channel DDR4 - No Upgrade

CPU and GPU Performance

Thanks to Digit. My review unit was restricted to not to touch the internals and that's why I have to use this.

Going a bit off to the topic, Are you guys able to see the processor and graphics chip? I believe not. Just look at the heat pipe and follow it towards the left side. You will find it shared between the CPU and GPU. Hence, change in the one will affect another one also.

Coming back to the topic, an Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA MX330 Graphics are powering the laptop to give you high performance. To make this laptop even faster, Mi has provided the 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. And that allows us to open and edit larger files noticeably quicker than the hard disk.

Cinebench R20 Score

To check the CPU performance, I have run the Cinebench test on this laptop 3 times. And the average of the tests shown in the above image. Furthermore, Cinebench is a tool used to check the single and multi-core CPU performance.

The Cinebench test without a cooling pad has ended up with 371 and 891 of a single and multi-core score, respectively. And, with a cooling pad, the multi-core score has raised to 893, while the single-core score was the same as 371.

So, the use of a cooling pad is a little bit gonna help you out by increasing the multi-core performance. In addition to that, see in the below where this Notebook 14 Horizon is, when compared to other laptops of price below ₹60,000.

As per the above chart of Cinebench R20 single core score comparison, Dell Inspiron 14 3493, Asus VivoBook Ultra 15, and Lenovo IdeaPad S145 scored quite higher than this laptop despite less price. Let's compare the multi-core to check the results.

As per the above chart of Cinebench R20 multi-core score comparison, all of the above machines including HP 14 DK0093AU and Acer Aspire 3 A315 have score better than this Mi Notebook 14.

So, based on the Cinebench comparison, I found this laptop a quite low power despite Intel Core i7 Comet Lake CPU when compared to the nearly same priced laptops of Core-i5 processor.

Geekbench 5 Score

When tested this machine using Geekbench 5 Score, It has scored 967 for single-core and 3031 for multi-core. See in the below charts where I have compared this laptop with other laptops to give you an idea of what to expect.

As per the above chart of Geekbench 5 Single-Core score comparison, Dell Inspiron 14 3493 and Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has score higher than this one despite they have Intel Core i5 CPU. Let's compare the multi-core scores to check how this laptop has performed.

As per the above chart of Geekbench 5 Multi-Core score comparison, the results are similar to that we got in Single-Core comparison. But, this time Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is leading.

So, both comparison has placed this laptop at the 3rd position out of 6 - Little above average.

PCMark 10 Score

The chart of PCMark 10 score comparison of this machine with others. Luckily, this notebook has secured the 1st position.

When tested this laptop using PCMark 10 score, It has secured the score of 4391. When compared it with other 6 laptops of price below than that of this machine (₹60,000), Mi Notebook 14 Horizon found at the 1st position.

So, PCMark 10 score has revealed that this laptop is very effective in productivity works like Office uses. Cinebench R20 score shows the capability of the machine to handle the processor-intensive tasks.

3DMark Fire Strike Score

The chart on the comparison of 3DMark Fire Strike score of this laptop with other machines. In this comparison, this notebook has secured the 1st position.

When tested this laptop with 3DMark Fire Strike, This machine has scored 3912 ans ranked at the 1st position when compared to other 5 laptops of price below and same than this one's, thanks to the NVIDIA's MX330 Graphics. 3DMark is used to check the graphical performance of laptop.

Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 has secured second position with a score of 3726, despite the same price.

Average CPU and GPU Clock Speeds

An Intel Core i7-10510U Comet Lake chip which is equipped on this machine has a base clock speed of 1.8GHz which can be overclocked to the maximum of 4.9GHz. As this machine is not for gaming, CPU overclocking isn't impactful for normal tasks as it's in gaming.

The average CPU and GPU clock speeds were measured by performing the stress test using AIDA64 tool. The average of 3 runs is in the below image.

During the stress test at an auto fan, the CPU and GPU clock speeds were 1823 and 1531MHz, respectively. The same test with 0.15v undervolted CPU has increased both' clock speeds to 2209 and 1564MHz, respectively. In addition to that, further use of a cooling pad has even further increased the CPU speed to 2311MHz and GPU by 1MHz.

So, overall, CPU undervolting has a noticeable effect on the improvement of clock speed. And the buying of a cooling pad for this laptop is also found worthy.

Furthermore, as Mi Notebook 14 Horizon is not a gaming laptop, I don't have to check it for TDP as it isn't required here. I would have done it if this was a gaming laptop.

Video Editing Performance

The video editing performance of this laptop was tested by two ways.

  • Average of the video export time
  • Multitasking during video export

Average of the video export time

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

As you can see in the above image that this Mi Notebook 14 Horizon laptop has exported the video in on average 18 minutes and 20 seconds (1100 seconds). See in the below chart, which shows the video export time of the same video by different 5 laptops of price range below ₹60,000.

As per the above chart, this machine has ranked 1st when compared to other 5 laptops. That makes this machine enough good for video editing.

Multitasking during video export

The motive to conduct this test wasn’t other than to rate the smoothness of this laptop when the CPU is busy with intense work. I have checked the following during the video export, the touchpad, keyboard, and laptop’s response time.

Overall, I found quite good results, thanks to the Intel Core i7 CPU, NVIDIA MX330 GPU, 2666MHz 8GB DDR4 RAM, and 512GB SSD Storage.

Thermal Performance

This test was performed to tell you whether the CPU undervolting and cooling pad are efficient in temperature reduction with stable or increased performance. For the stress test, I have used the AIDA64 tool. So, the results are in the below image.

At idle at auto fan, the CPU and GPU temperatures were 41 and 46 degrees C, respectively.

During the stress test with an auto fan, both CPU and GPU temperatures were raised to 86 and 73 degrees C, respectively. The same test with 0.15v undervolted CPU has reduced the CPU temperature to 82.1 degrees C and GPU to 66 C. That's much more.

In addition to that, the use of a cooling pad in the same test has further reduced both' temperatures to 81.3 and 64.7 degrees C, respectively.

So, the CPU undervolting has noticeably reduced both CPU and GPU temperature. And the use of cooling has also shown a bit positive impact that makes its buying worthy. That's the only outcome of this test.

Furthermore, in the following chart, I have compared the temperatures of laptops (the same and below price) measured during stress test at an auto fan.

As per the above chart, this machine is on the last position that shows the highest temperature of the processor during the processor-intensive tasks like video editing, gaming, and like. Which directly reflects the poor thermal management when compared to other laptops shown in that chart.

Laptop’s Exterior Temperature

At idle at an auto fan, the exterior was near to mid 30 C.

During the stress test at an auto fan, the exterior temperature was touching mid 40 C. At that time, the QWERTY part was found below an average hot. And the line of the function keys was near 46 degrees C.

During the stress test with 0.15v undervolted CPU, the exterior was found below than the previous test. So, overall, I found an average efficient cooling solution inside the laptop governed by 1 fan with a shared heat pipe between the CPU and GPU and a long belt of air intake vents at the bottom of the machine.

Fans Performance

Fans noise level in dB at idle - auto fan, stress - auto fan, and stress test - auto fan - 0.15v CPU UV.

At idle, the fan was completely silent. During the stress test at an auto fan, it was heard but not distracting. During the same test with 0.15v undervolted CPU, the sound was almost of the same level (47.3dB).

Furthermore, see in the below chart where I have compared the fan's noise produced by other laptops.

As per the above chart, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has a very silent fan (47.9 dB) compared to other laptops except Lenvovo IdeaPad S145 (47.1 dB). It is to note that the single fan has indirectly contributed to the reduced noise. And Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has the most noisy fans (50.1 dB). In addition to that, Gaming laptops have more noisy fans than this but that's another case.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera attached at the top bezel of Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition separately.

The 720p camera comes as a separate bundle with no Windows Hello support here. Both the camera and microphone are average in quality.

At the idle mode of the laptop, the microphone has captured a clear voice. During the stress test at the auto fan, the fan was heard. Still, the microphone was able to capture the sound clearly. Although there was a lot of noise recorded in addition to my voice.

So, overall, not incredible but not too below, just okay to get the job done. When compared in terms of camera quality to other 5 laptops of price range below than this one, this machine has secured 1st position along with Lenovo IdeaPad S145 and Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513. See in the below chart.

As per the above chart, Dell Inspiron 14 3493 and HP 14 DK0093AU have a quite lower camera quality. When compared in terms of microphone quality to the same laptops, the results are pretty same. See in the below chart.

Speakers

Down-firing speakers of Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition.

The 2 down-firing speakers are placed underneath the laptop near the front corners at both sides. While listening to the YouTube video, I have found the speakers clear but not enough at maximum volume. In addition to that, they sound bit tiny. Digitech Sound level meter has measured 78.1dB of sound level while watching YouTube videos.

As shown in the above chart, when compared in terms of sound level to other laptops of same to and below price than this one, Mi is falling below the average. IdeaPad S145 has produced highest level of sound (86dB) whereas Acer Aspire 3 A315 is at 77dB.

When compared in terms of sound clarity to the same laptops, I found it falling behind. Asus VivoBook M513 has produced higher sound level of 84dB than Mi notebook (78.1dB) along with a clear sound. HP 14 DK0093AU and Acer Aspire 3 have also clear to hear speakers but the sound level is falling behind to Mi Notebook 14.

Right Side

Ports on the right side of the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition.

On the right side of Mi Notebook, there are the following ports from left to right.

  • 1 USB Type-C (For data transfer only)
  • 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A
  • 1 HDMI 2.0 output
  • 1 Power input

Luckily this notebook has USB Type-C Gen 1 port is available for data transfer only. It can transfer the data at the rate up to 5Gbps. When compared to the same laptops, I found 2 other laptops have this port. See in the below chart.

Left Side

Ports on the left side of the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition.

On the left side of Mi Notebook, there are the following ports from left to right.

  • Air exhaust
  • 1 USB 2.0
  • 1 audio/combo jack

Backside

There's nothing on the backside of it except air exhausts. Furthermore, the air exhausts are covered by the lid of the display that only visible from either tilted bottom or top.

Air Intake Vents

The bottom of the laptop has two belts of air intake vents. The bottom-right part is directly above the fan to suck the fresh air to keep the laptop internals cool.

Battery

This Mi Notebook 14 Horizon has 48Wh battery. It has lasted for 105 minutes during the continuous stress test and for 449 minutes while watching YouTube videos at 50% of screen brightness, keyboard backlightings off, and background apps disabled. See in the below image.

When compared in terms of battery capacity to the same laptops, I found this notebook is ranking on the 1st position. See in the below chart.

When compared in terms of battery life during YouTube watching, the results are pretty same for this laptop.

When compared in terms of battery life during stress test, the results are again found pretty same for this notebook 14.

Storage

This Mi Notebook has got 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. There is no additional hard disk like Dell G3 3500 and Acer Nitro 5. I have used the CrystalDiskMark tool to check the speed. Furthermore, the speed was checked for partitioned storage, not for full storage. Hence, the full-speed of storage is actually a bit more than that of my readings.

So, it's too fast. It has reached 1843MB/s in reading speed and 871MB/s of write speed. But, in terms of SSD speed, this laptop falls behind when compared to Dell G3 3500 and Acer Nitro 5 AN515. There other gaming laptops also which have faster SSD storage than this Notebook 14.

Gaming Benchmarks

I have played the following games for exactly half an hour and the benchmarks in terms of FPS were measured for the maximum-settings.

  • Crysis 3
  • CS:GO
Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition Gaming Benchmarks.

The benchmarks are below average when compared to other gaming laptops. This laptop has got MX series NVIDIA GPU which isn't powerful graphics. It's just to handle graphical tasks other than gaming.

But, for medium to the low level of settings, I found this laptop efficient. But, at the same time, you won't be able to enjoy more if it, speaking from personal experience.

Final Thoughts

I found this Mi Notebook 14 Horizon as a beginner-friendly laptop and, great, in terms of price. In just ₹60,000 prices in India, it does come with many superior specs like Intel Core i7 CPU, a dedicated NVIDIA MX350 GPU, and many more. But, several performance tests categorized this laptop as below-average in terms of performance. The 14-inch display is below-average bright. It has no impressive colour gamut that makes this laptop useless for professional photo and video editors. With the all-aluminium build, this laptop fails to meet the boundary to be sturdy. The inconsistent tactile feedback and little more flex in the non-precision touchpad have prevented me from calling it a premium quality. The speakers are loud and clear, but we often use headphone or earbuds, so doesn't look like anything important. Also, it has no thunderbolt port, which is pretty awkward. And the second disappointing thing is that this device has a separate camera bundle and, we people are not prone to not lose it. And, it doesn't support Windows Hello even. Furthermore, my several performance tests have also revealed its little poor thermal management. Overall, I've rated this Mi Notebook 14 Horizon laptop 39.06 out of 100.
