Hello, guys. Today, in this article, I'm going to review the Lenovo IdeaPad S340's 81VV008TIN variant in detail.

In addition to that, I will also compare it with other laptops to give you an idea of what to expect from the same price range laptops. So, let’s get started. But before I begin, read my dedicated article on laptop specs written in easy-to-understand language.

The Build Quality and Material

Pretty solid aluminum lid of this laptop with a plastic base.

My review unit of 81VV008TIN of Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is made of a metal lid with a poly carbon base. It's pretty solid and sturdy enough. The aluminium lid gives more strength in considerably low weight. However, the design of this laptop is classic, it's not premium that you get in Acer or Asus laptops.

Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN are 32.3 cms (12.7 inches) in width, 23 cms (9 inches) in depth, and 1.8 cms (0.7 inches) in height. In addition to that, I have also measured the weight using Propert’s weighing scale. The weight is

The purpose to check the laptop’s weight with its charging accessories is to give you an idea about the weight you may need to carry during travelling. When compared to other laptops, it found much lightweight.

Display Quality and Color Reproduction

Size and Quality

This Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN has 14-inch FHD IPS display with 60Hz refresh rate. From the left and right sides, it's surrounded by 6mm thin bezels white the top and the bottom bezels are quite thick. It has good viewing angles, thanks to the IPS panel. And the screen contrast ratio 1114:1 which beyond the minimum of 1000:1.

Screen Color Reproduction

I have measured the screen color gamut to measure color reproduction efficiency. For that, I have used the Spyder 5 PRO. And the SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC results for this 14-inch IPS display are in the below image.

As shown in the above image, the color gamut for this laptop’s display is 58% of SRGB, 38% of AdobeRGB, and 36% of NTSC as produced by Spyder 5 PRO. Honestly, the color gamut result is quite poor which makes this laptop useless for professional photo and video editors.

Display Nits at different Brightness levels

This Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN’s display has reached 223 Nits at 100% of screen brightness at the center of the screen as shown in the above image. So, below an average brighter display. The average brighter display should have nits value of at least 290 to 300. The 300 nits display allows you to work in direct sunlight without having pain in your eyes.

Screen Flex

When intentionally moved the screen with fingers up and down, I found a little screen flex there. But, honestly, it wasn’t problematic for me, thanks to the aluminum lid of the laptop. Lenovo has done an excellent job by equipping an Aluminum metal for the lid which contributes to the highest possible strength in low weight.

As you can see in the above, the hinge is running mostly along the base. Such placement of hinge also helps to reduce the flex. The hinge allows the display to turn 180-degree right back to the keyboard. It is to note that I failed when I have tried to open the display with one finger. That shows the uneven distribution of weight across the hinge.


Build Quality and Flex

The chiclet keyboard of this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN laptop has black keys with white fonts on it including the secondary functions of keys. The keyboard with its island, made of all-poly-carbon. In addition to that, the keys have a little curve at the bottom edge which makes a little bit of distraction initially.

In addition to that, the WASD part isn’t highlighted here, which isn’t even required since this laptop is not a gaming machine.

The keyboard has a white zonal backlit to illuminate the keys in the low-light or darkroom. The backlit is enough bright to illuminate the keys’ secondary functions.

Overall, I found the Chiclet keyboard of this laptop quite better than Mi Notebook 14 Horizon’s Scissor mechanism. Also, Mi has not put the backlit on it. So, not incredible but not bad even, just a little above an average to get the job done.

Typing Experience

While typing on this keyboard, I found the keys were travelling on average 1.45mm of distance down. That’s a little below than we recommend. At thanalysis, we recommend at least 1.5mm of travel for keys for tactile feedback. However, I found the feedback consistent.

On 10FastFingers.com, I achieved 84 words per minute (WPM) speed while my speed on Macbook Pro 16-inch is 101 WPM. The keyboard of this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN laptop gives tactile feedback. In addition to that, during aggressive typing, I found no flex on the keyboard.

However, the keys are a little bit noisy but you will find them considerably silent when compared to the mechanical keyboards.

Furthermore, the placement of the power button is somewhat different than other laptops. Lenovo has placed it almost outside of the keyboard area, though the chances of the accidental wrong press are still a little bit there due to its very close placement to the "delete" key. However, during typing, I've never found it pressed undesirably.

Small and Very Closely Placed 2 Arrow keys

The 2 arrow keys are smaller in size and also bad-placed. They are too small and near to each other, which will make the accidental wrong press very easily. So, overall, the keyboard is better than the Asus VivoBook Ultra 15 M513 and Mi Notebook 14 Horizon laptops.

The plastic touchpad of this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN laptop occupies the area of 10.1 x 7 cms (4.1 x 2.75 inches) approximately. In my experience, it is found to be smooth, responsive, and accurate. And it uses Windows Precision drivers despite made of plastic material instead of glass.

In addition to that, it clicks down anywhere. Unlike Mi Notebook's touchpad, this one doesn't get bend down more.

Fingerprints on the Smooth Surface

Fingerprints easily show up on the smooth matte grey finish. But, I found it easy to clean using a micro-fibre cloth. In addition to that, unlike Alienware m15 R2 gaming laptop, I found no change in surface color over the use. In Alienware’s white version, I found it was getting slightly yellowish at some of the parts.


This 81VV008TIN variant of Lenovo IdeaPad S340 laptop is been equipped with 8GB of 2666MHz Dual Channel DDR4 RAM. Here, the 4GB of RAM is a soldered RAM. So, you cannot upgrade it. But, according to the price, ₹58,000, the amount of RAM that Lenovo has equipped is perfectly fine. The 8GB RAM allows you to do smooth multitasking on this machine.

Processor and Graphics

An Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU and Intel's integrated UHD GPU is powering this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN laptop’s performance. In addition to that, Lenovo has equipped 256GB of PCIe SSD storage in addition to 1TB of the 5400RPM hard disk. So, the SSD is going to boost your laptop’s speed at lightning speed.

So, let’s check some of the benchmarks to see where this laptop stands in terms of specs.

Cinebench R20 Score

Here, I took 3 runs of Cinebench on this laptop and shown the average of it. Cinebench is a tool to measure the single and multi-core scores of the CPU.

Unlike in Mi Notebook, Dell G3 3500, Acer Swift 3 SF314-57G, and other Intel-powered laptops, I cannot do CPU undervolting here. Hence, the only thing that remains for us is to check the performance with and without a cooling pad.

Like other laptops of ₹60,000 price range, this IdeaPad has shown the same 403 scores for Single Core and 1382 for Multi-Core when tested with and without a cooling pad. So, the use of a cooling pad to increase the laptop's performance is unworthy here. Now, the question is what these scores tell?

First of all, During the testing, Cinebench R20 puts an excessive load on the CPU to execute the tasks. By doing so, it will check the machine’s cooling solution also which other tool doesn’t except for 3DMark. So, when the CPU comes under a heavy load, thermal throttling takes place in the processor and it reduces the performance.

For example, If your CPU has a max clock speed of 4.5GHz, then you will reach 4.1GHz max during gaming or stress tests. The reason for not picking up the limit is thermal throttling. So, If the Cinebench R20 score of the laptop is high means the laptop has a high powerful CPU with better thermal management.

Now, let’s check Geekbench benchmarks.

Geekbench 5 Score

When tested this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN laptop using Geekbench 5, I found this laptop has scored 1084 for single-core and 3386 for multi-core. Now, what does this score tell?

It tells the performance of the laptop. The higher the score, the higher the performance. Here, you have to consider the multi-core score. Look, Geekbench doesn’t put an excessive load on the CPU like Cinebench R20. And, Geekbench considers mainly productivity tasks like emailing, browsing, multitasking, and etc to evaluate the hardware.

And, such ways cannot give you an idea about the cooling solution. Because tiny tasks don’t make much weight on the CPU. Hence, If the laptop has a higher Geekbench multi-core score means its capability for productivity is much better. But, at the same time, information about thermal throttling and the cooling solution will remain unanswered by this tool.

Hence, for gamers and programmers, Geekbench isn’t a tool to evaluate the laptop. It’s better to consider Cinebench here. And, for normal users or office users, this one seems to be getting the job done.

Average CPU Clock Speeds

Average CPU clock speeds of this laptop during Stress tests with a turbo boost.

To check the CPU clock speeds, I have used AIDA64 tool.

In a stress test at an auto fan without a cooling pad, the CPU and GPU clock speeds were 2572MHz. The same test with a cooling pad has raised the CPU speed by 9MHz. So, no noticeable change has been observed. It clearly indicates that the use of a cooling pad for this laptop is useless. Hence, only buy it if you’re about to waste your money.

In addition to that, As Intel UHD Graphics is integrated within the same silicon board and not much powerful as dedicated GPUs, it’s worthless to measure its speed. Because it won’t make any noticeable change.

Furthermore, as my review unit of Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN is neither a gaming laptop not it has even MX series NVIDIA GPU, it’s void to conduct the CPU and GPU TDP test. Hence, for a non-gaming laptop like this one, I have skipped such a test.

Video Editing Performance

The video editing performance of this laptop was tested by two ways.

  • Average of the video export time
  • Multitasking during video export

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video on YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

So, during my test of video export in 4K preset, this Lenovo IdeaPad has ended up in on average 30 minutes and 41 seconds. That’s too much.

Multitasking during video export

The motive to conduct this test wasn’t other than to rate the smoothness of this laptop when the CPU is busy with intense work. I have checked the following during the video export, the touchpad, keyboard, and laptop’s response time.

So, During this test, I found this laptop almost laggy. As it has no dedicated NVIDIA graphics, not even of the MX series, the expectation of good performance is useless. Overall, I found it below an average for video editing when compared to Mi Notebook 14 Horizon edition.

Thermal Performance

This test was performed to tell you whether the cooling pad is efficient in temperature reduction with stable or increased performance. For the stress test, I have used the AIDA64 tool. So, the results are in the below image.

At idle at the auto fan, the CPU temperature was 48 degrees C. In the stress test at an auto fan, it has raised to 81. With the use of a cooling pad, it has a little reduced to 78 C.

So, the use of a cooling pad has shown a little noticeable reduction of 2 degrees in CPU temperature. That’s not a big change in my eyes, but if you think it’s a matter for you then must go for buying.

Laptop’s Exterior Temperature

At idle at an auto fan, both the palm rest and a keyboard found pretty cool.

During the stress test at the auto fan, the palm rest was found cool to touch. The middle of the keyboard was at around 37 degrees C. The sides of the middle of the keyboard were found less hot compared to it. The exterior above the function keys was a bit hotter to touch. Furthermore, there was no difference between the QWERTY part and other keys in terms of temperature.

During the same test with a cooling pad, I found the base little bit cooler than the previous condition. That makes little bit sense on the importance of the cooling pad for this laptop.

Fans Noise Emission

At idle, the single fan of this Lenovo IdeaPad S340 laptop has emitted 31.1dB of noise which is not even heard. During the stress test at an auto fan, the level was increased to 42.7dB.

In addition to that, the gaming laptops like Lenovo Legion 7i, Dell Alienware m15 R2, MSI GS65 Stealth-004, and like have more noisy fans than this one. the noise level during gaming at performance mode increases to 60dB. And, that’s become equal to the noise emitted by a washing machine, hairdryer, and electric toothbrush.

But, such a scenario is not the case with this laptop.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera and a microphone are placed at the top bezel of the display. They are just average in quality. The HD camera of this laptop has captured the picture with average noise on the balcony on the second floor of my building. Here, note that there was no direct sunlight hitting me.

In addition to that, the microphone was also managed its position with an average score. I rate both of them 5 out of 10. Furthermore, the camera doesn't support Windows Hello here.


Down-firing speaker of this laptop.

The 2 down-firing speakers are placed at the front corner of both sides. They are pretty louder, produced 84dB of sound on average while watching YouTube videos. But, they sound bit tiny with a little bit of bass present.

Air Intake Vents

On the back cover, there a large belt, almost 12-inch in length, of air intake vents to let the cool air enter into the laptop. These air intake vents were responsible for the little bit reduction in the CPU temperature when used the cooling pad.

In ₹60,000 price range, Lenovo IdeaPad S340 81VV008TIN is the best laptop in terms of battery life. Its 52.5Wh battery lasted for 8 hours and 39 minutes while watching YouTube videos at 50% of screen brightness, background apps disabled, and other lightings off. And, during the stress test, It's lasted for 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Overall in terms of battery life, this laptop is above average.


This laptop has 256GB of PCIe-based SSD storage in addition to the 1TB of 5400RPM hard disk. I have used the CrystalDiskMark tool to test its speed. And the results are below. Note that I have only checked the SSD's speed.

As you can see in the above image, the SSD is so faster in reading and writing the files. In my testings, I found it 3067MB/sec faster at reading and 1073MB/sec at writing. So, these results are quite better to load and edit multiple files smoothly and quickly.

Furthermore, The above figure consists of many technical terms like 4K, Seq, and the like. You can read the interpretation of these terms here. For gaming FPS, I haven't measured the benchmarks because this IdeaPad has no dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics.

Final Thoughts

After reviewing the 81VV008TIN variant of Lenovo IdeaPad S340 laptop, I have rated it 37.3 out of 100. It's high-performance machine powered by an Intel Core i5 CPU with Intel UHD GPU. Due to the lack of a dedicated GPU, it's incapable of gaming or graphics-intensive tasks. In the ₹58,000 price range, this laptop comes up with a pretty tactile 2-level backlit keyboard in which 1.45mm of average keys' travel recorded. Furthermore, the touchpad is found smooth, responsive, and accurate. And, it also supports Windows precision drivers despite having a plastic surface. In addition to that, it lacks the latest Intel Wi-Fi 6, but the existing Wi-Fi 5 of this laptop is also considerably faster in wireless communication. And, for wireless devices such a Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, Speakers, this laptop has Bluetooth 5.0 that's responsible for faster wireless connectivity to give you a much smoother experience. The 14-inch FHD Display has good viewing angles, thanks to the IPS panel. In addition to that, it reaches 234 Nits at 100% of brightness - a below-average value. Furthermore, the display's color gamut values are also below-average. In terms of music capabilities, the 2 down-firing speakers are capable to reach 84dB on average YouTube video. The camera and a microphone are rated 5 out 10 by me. The camera also found to not supporting Windows Hello. In addition to that, I found this laptop unresponsive to the cooling pad when used for performance increase. When I talk about the performance, the Cinebench R20 has reached 1382 in Multi-Core score. Overall, a pretty beginner-level machine in a very affordable price range for students other than computer science, chemical, and mechanical engineering. However, it's best for office uses due to its specs and the low-weight.
